OMG! Maggots in my wheelie bin!! Help!!

Please can someone tell me what to do? I went out to throw some bags in the bin and freaked out when I opened the lid. Unfortunately, I can’t fcuking sort it out now as my shower cubicle has a new sealant all through and it needs to dry. That means I can’t shower.
The bin is on the side of my property (semi detached house) Will they be all over the place by tomorrow?

What can I do now? Will they crawl into the house? I’ve never seen maggots before (raised abroad) and DH and I are totally freaking out. Please can someone calm me down.

There's another thread running just now about maggots. I used loads of salt and fly spray. Others have used boiling water. I will find the other thread

Thanks. I read the replies on that thread.

My bin collection is next Wednesday. That 6 days! What do I do until then? Once the bins have been emptied, I will get them cleaned.

Fly spray.

Activemum81 · 09/08/2018 20:39

dementedpixie - my bin is nearly full. Shall I put in salt and fly spray over the bags ? Or shall I move the bags into another bin.

I already feel them crawling over me :(

Where can I get fly spray? Sainsbury’s or Tesco?

peachpebbles,
Where can I get fly spray? Sainsbury’s or Tesco?

Shall I spray it right on the bags in the bin ? Or do I have to remove the bags? (Pls day no)

Any supermarket should sell fly spray. Yes I'd just dump the salt on top. Use lots. Fly spray and shut the lid and spray it round the edge of the lid

You can get these company’s that clean your bins out regularly mine charges 3.50 a time, didn’t have a maggot problem but bins were grim when I bought the place and with fortnightly collections I was worried.

Activemum81 · 09/08/2018 20:47

dementedpixie - thank you

Can it wait till morning or do you think I should do it now? Am I likely to end up having them all over the drive if I leave it till morning?

No they will stay where the food is, they won't go out the bin

Pancakeflipper · 09/08/2018 20:49

Bin Buddy. Someone mentioned it on this site years ago and I got some off Amazon. No maggots since...

Activemum81 · 09/08/2018 20:50

I need to find someone nearby ASAP. I usually clean our bins with pressure washer once in a month or two. They never smelt.

I must confess that I threw half a watermelon into a black bin yesterday as it didn’t fit in the food waste. I’m convinced that’s the fcuking root cause of all this. I’m kicking myself atm.

Yes you may well have them all over the drive, we did, it was disgusting. We took everything out, double bagged it all, poured bleach and hot water into the bin, sprayed fly spray and rang environmental health .

Elzbells · 09/08/2018 20:51

I had maggots in my wheelie bin, when it went dark they all went on a mass evacuation.

I'd opened the door to call in the cat and, no word of a lie, the drive was heaving with them. I shut the door, put a towel across the bottom to stop them getting in and ignored them.

All gone by morning. When I get them now I leave the lid open so they can escape in a more orderly fashion.

And get my bin cleaned every 2 weeks.

HoleyCoMoley · 09/08/2018 20:51

Ours got out of a bag with chicken in it, out the bin, down the sides and onto the drive.

dementedpixie · 09/08/2018 20:53

Ours never left the bin but I did dump a load of salt on them so maybe that stopped them

fleshmarketclose · 09/08/2018 20:55

I'd put the bin up to the pavement and open the lid. Any that escape will be devoured by hedgehogs who consider them a delicacy and those still in the bin will be eaten by the birds at the crack of dawn. Don't spray them let them be eaten instead.

SamanthaH92 · 09/08/2018 21:00

I feel your pain OP. We had a missed bin just over two weeks ago, not the only ones on our street. The council have refused to come and empty the bin and some twat has ripped our bin bags open, god knows what they were looking for!! And now our bin is crawling with maggots. We rang the council again and put in a complaint...they basically just said tuff tits. So now we have to wait an extra two weeks for them to empty it. Its awful and I'm refusing to bring it in our back yard where my kids play.

Activemum81 · 09/08/2018 21:06

fleshmarketclose: I’d love to do that, but we get foxes in our garden. They rip the bags open and throw the contents all over 🤮
