Hi all, hoping for any suggestions to our predicament.
This is the problem. We are toilet training our toddler, and therefore will need to move the gate from his bedroom door to the top of the stairs when the time comes for night training (I knew that won't be for a while yet but want to plan ahead).
The problem is I have no idea how we will be able to do so. The 1st picture is the square that is at the top of the stairs, bathroom is the door straight ahead of it. The 2nd picture is ds's bedroom door. The 3rd picture is the banister.
Because the banister does not reach the top step we have no way of fixing a gate to it. Dh suggested attaching a piece of wood to the banister and securing the gate to that, but that would make the gap to get past even smaller.
The other option would be put the gate across the 2nd to top step, which I'm concerned is not safe enough, and may not work because of the hand rail.

Any suggestions as to what we can do?
Our tenancy is up next month and we have been asked if we want to renew. Overall we are happy here, but I'm struggling to find a way round the small gap. (Please no comments that we shouldn't have moved in, due to bad problems with our former landlord never doing anything that needed doing we wanted to move ASAP and this was the first nice house we found)

Also excuse the awful carpet, it was here when we moved in.

Just use a potty at night, until your child is safe without a gate?

We're not using a potty at all, we went straight for the toilet. So don't really want to do that. Thanks though

Aged 3 or 4, do you need a stair gate?
A night light at the top of the stairs, and no stair gate would get my vote.

How much harm can be caused by slipping down a step or 2? Especially compared to the general knocks toddlers take day to day finding their feet?
Put the gate a step or 2 down and live with it

If you wait until child is ready you shouldnt need many/any trips to toilet. The hormone that kicks in tells the body to produce less urine, so you don’t need to empty bladder through the night. My kids went from wet at night to dry without any solo nighttime toilet trips. So maybe you don’t need to worry? Certainly wouldn’t move House over it!

Knittedfairies · 08/08/2018 20:33

Neither of my children took solo trips to the bathroom during the night. Wait and see what happens; you may be over-thinking this, and not worth moving house for!

Would an adjustable gate do on the step where the bannister is? I've attached a picture of ours which I'd recommend, but I've potty trained two (almost the second anyway!) and not needed it so in hindsight I'd not use one at all but totally understand the feeling you do need one.

Also excuse the carpet Blush

How old is your toddler? We tend to get rid of stair gates age 2 ish. I would also say that being dry through the night tends to mean they don’t need to go to the toilet during the night. For the odd time they do I can’t imagine them getting up on their own in the dark and going by themselves anyway.

Would it work to attach gate to right hand side wall outside of bathroom and bring it across diagonally to close on banister. It would open againt the wall out over the stairs. You would need an angled piece of wood to hold fittings in correct place on banister. (The finishing edging for wooden floors might be right angle.) there would still be small triangular gap at top step so maybe attach a spongy draught excluder to bottom of gate with cable ties. Hope that helps. Smile

How about a retractable one (a bit like a roller blind but sideways). We had one and you can attach them at any angle
