Safestyle windows - very bizarre 15 minutes

A couple of months ago we had a quote for a new front door from Safestyle. He was your typical sales person and talked the talk. At nearly 50 I wasn't fooled at all, I've experienced a few hard sale idiots and I think he knew that.

He gave us a few prices, one for cash, one discounted and one for if we had it on finance - none of them were appealing to us (the lowest was £1400) so we said we would think about it and he left.

This afternoon I had a phone call from Safestyle, asking for feedback and they wanted to know why we hadn't had the door fitted. I told them the price was too high and if they could do it for £1200 I'd be seriously interested. The bloke said yes that could be possible and he would even give us buy now and pay next September. I explained what door it was and how we have an extra panel (a flag) at the side. No problem, he said.

So the original sale guy arrives at 6pm claiming to know nothing about the conversation I had (& subsequent 2 other conversations confirming the price & apt) with the guy at head office. He puts all the door details in and rings his boss to sign it off. He then has a shouting match with his boss who tells him he can't do that door for that price. The best he can do is £1320. I was a bit shocked at how they were talking to each other.

So I stand up and say, no, I've been told £1200 and that's all I'm willing to pay. He apologised and said the telesales guys don't always know what they're doing.

Then he left. Part of me thinks it's only another £120 more but the other part thinks, no, I was told £1200. Was this all an act?

At least it was only 15 minutes of your time! They're an awful company - try a local form instead.

wowfudge · 08/08/2018 18:58

Or firm even

Cardiganandcuppa · 08/08/2018 19:00

Yeah I reckon that was an act.
Maybe they’ll ring you tomorrow and offer £1200.

Knittedfairies · 08/08/2018 19:04

We had a similar experience with a door, but I showed him the way out when all the ‘I’ll have a word with my manager’ nonsense started. In the end we went with a local guy who gave us a fixed price and fitted it for that.

BG2015 · 08/08/2018 19:04

Yes I'm going to try a local firm.

It wasn't very pleasant listening to them arguing

They're awful! Years ago my husband made the mistake of getting them in for quote. The salesman was rude, condescending, sexist and refused to leave. I told him that he had to go so that we could pick up dd from school and he said he would wait for us to get back. I ended up being extremely blunt and telling him that he had to leave immediately.

johnd2 · 08/08/2018 19:33

You weren't fooled at all ...but the "I'm on your side but the boss won't let me" is the oldest trick in the book! Steer well clear.

We had windows and a door from them. They're a crap company. The existing window sills outside were meant to have been removed but the fitter just put plastic covers over the wooden sills. I had to get them to change the lot. The door couldn't have been fitted properly - it looked good and seemed fine, but the first time it rained heavily, water poured in through the top and one side, and even through the letterbox! It took them a week to come out and fix it. By then, my hall carpet was ruined and we had to replace it

Yeah, that's apparently a very standard trick.

That's the point. I'd run a mile rather than deal with a firm like that. the fact they have two layers of sales staff means you will be paying far more than it's worth.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 08/08/2018 20:14

They rang me after I'd shown an interest in having a quote. Then, when I told them that actually I didn't want to go through with it as we weren't looking to replace the windows this year, the bloke on the phone just kept talking over me telling me that the quote would last a certain number of months (no thanks) and that they could arrange a visit soon.

After I'd said no thanks to him twice I had to hang up as he was still going on

dobbob · 08/08/2018 20:16

100% an act had EXACTLY the same, only for Windows. They're a shit company, we went with some independent guys locally and they were brilliant. Avoid those big companies at all costs.

Mol1628 · 08/08/2018 20:51

We had a safestyle guy in for a windows quote. He stayed for ages, wouldn’t leave. Told him over and over we weren’t making an on the spot decision. He phoned his boss and gave us a ‘today only’ price. 🙄

We got a local firm in the end a few hundred cheaper.
