London - nice area to rent for 45 year olds!

We are thinking of renting out our house and having a couple of years perhaps in London.
This won't be for a little while, but we are doing some research.
We would be looking to spend between £1800 and £2500 per month I guess and would be hoping for an area suitable for a couple of 45 year olds with some nice bars/coffee shops/restaurants in walking distance and near a tube line into central London.
Any recommendations?
Thank you so much!

Would suggest crouch end, zone 3 lovely and green with village feeling. Lots of interesting shops and cafes

Needmoresleep · 10/08/2018 11:47

Yes the supermarket thing is confusing me as well. I dont recall really ever doing big super market shops, even when the kids were younger. Independent butcher, baker, cheesemonger ,and fish and fruit from the market.

Better quality and overall much cheaper and healthier than being tempted by supermarket "bargains". Then the odd top up from (the many) nearby small supermarkets, and some bulk buying of cleaning stuff when passing a Lidl.

Maybe part of the art of enjoying life in London is to start living like a Londoner. Many of my friends have always managed fine without cars, and if I did not jhave to make regular trips outside London it would not be worth having one.

Edgy to me means somewhere where you might feel obliged to pick your teenage DC up rather than have them return home from a late night party using a night bus. Or where you clutch your handbag tighter when you walk down the street. I feel as safe where we live as I would in most towns in the UK, and DC always used public transport without me worrying about them.

I still have not worked out where you live, Bubbles, but from your local park with open drug dealing etc, it would definately fall under my description of edgy. Edgy areas can be fun, with lots of stuff happening, and relatively cheap, but it depends on your attitude to risk. Many people prefer to pay a bit more for a greater sense of personal safety. There is a continual regeneration in London where young people move into cheap areas, "fun" bars and cafes follow them, and then the next generation are priced out and colonise somewhere else.

Crouch End doesn't have a tube.

cestlavielife · 10/08/2018 23:52

Not east Croydon! Go for 2 bed zone 1 or 2 with easy walk or bus to bank . Then you can enjoy being in london

solittletime · 11/08/2018 00:03

St John's wood might be worth a look. Much more central than it looks on tube map.

ARoomSomewhere · 11/08/2018 00:25

loads of info here!

AltheaorDonna · 11/08/2018 03:21

Hell no to East Croydon! Why on earth? It’s hardly desirable or central, and why would they need four bedrooms?

loveka · 11/08/2018 10:39

East Croydon?! This is a London adventure, so no to Croydon.

superram · 11/08/2018 10:45

Ealing Broadway would be the queen Elizabeth line straight through to bank so very quick from December and even quicker from Dec 19.

westendwellies · 11/08/2018 10:48

Southbank! Security is amazing as there is the London Eye and HoP, lots of politicians wandering around, 3 of the best coffee shops in London (voted by Time Out readers etc) are a minutes walk away in Lower Marsh, they would have finished the Shell Building complex by then So you'd be surrounded by new restaurants and shops, plus you’re already in the zone for the new year fireworks (and if you rent in the County Hall Building you get to party with the BBC people afterwards).

Fantastic place!

Needmoresleep · 11/08/2018 10:51

Westend - true, but really busy. Tourist central. A personal choice. Something a bit more residential within walking distance/short bus journey or right in the thick of it.

westendwellies · 11/08/2018 10:57

Needmoresleep Yes busy outsidebut that’s London. Once you are inside the complexes it’s cool and quiet and you get parking, gym, pool, sauna, yoga on site etc for your money. Lots of pluses. And celebs secretly live there lol!

StoatofDisarray · 11/08/2018 11:10

Borough.

westendwellies · 11/08/2018 11:11

Not Borough unless you like football ⚽️

howabout · 11/08/2018 11:12

Southbank is good shout if you want the Barbican but more lively and away from the City, especially good with weekends in mind. Also you can get on the Drain direct to Bank from Waterloo.

I wouldn't have lived in London Bridge or Southbank 25 years ago but would now highly recommend both - and even then Southbank Centre was great for culture and Borough for Street feel.

reeldoop · 11/08/2018 11:14

In fairness East Croydon is literally 10 mins form London Bridge and cheap in an uber from central.

If it was me, and i wish it was, id go for London Bridge/Borough too. I worked round there for a lng time and its where I would choose. Very vibrant, access to the river, lots of nice squares and parks and hidden gems all over the place as others have said.

westendwellies · 11/08/2018 11:37

Absolutely.

Needmoresleep · 11/08/2018 12:38

Not really arguing. Was just walking home from the National Theatre last week on a hot summer night and it was heaving. I made a mental note that I was glad I lived a further 10 minutes walk away. But it is really is each to their own. I like the quietness and village feel of central London at weekends.

Merrylegs · 11/08/2018 12:44

Oh no, Southbank is EXHAUSTING. Really. Similarly Millbank. And I wouldn't recommend a new building or one with loads of flats. They just don't feel that nice inside. Too many variables. There's always going to be someone smoking under your balcony or air b'n'bing or partying. And when you step outside your (communal) door it's all happening in your face. At once. No fun. You want a central London 'village' where the streets are leafy and quiet in relation and yet just ten minutes walk away the hoards are swarming around the Houses of Parliament or whatevs. (But Southbank v good for free wifi in RFH foyer for eg with tables to work).

westendwellies · 11/08/2018 12:59

Just choose a no smoking building and there’s no Airbnb allowed around the parliament area, security reasons. All apartments are 6 month minimum let.

BubblesBuddy · 11/08/2018 13:02

You get people openly smoking dope in many parks! It’s not confined to our little oasis! They don’t really bother anyone. The Police do respond though, but mostly to noise. Plenty of cocaine snorters in more expensive parts!!!

I don’t grip my bag extra tightly where I have my flat. DD1 felt uncomfortable with a drunk leering at her very early one morning but she was utterly terrified on the tube about 6 months ago when a man In her carriage started chanting and was gripping a ruck sack. There was a deathly hush in the carriage. The Transport Police were quick to arrive at the next station after the cord was pulled and interviewed passengers. She thought she would die.

So, you have to take London as if is. You cannot walk everywhere. Visiting friends may well involve public transport. People who work tend to use the tube or trains because of time. If part of your life is food shopping every day at the chi chi veg shop and buying from the Ginger Pig, that’s great, but many renters on a budget just cannot afford that. There are not markets everywhere and some local small stores have very limited offerings if you are a decent cook.

howabout · 11/08/2018 13:46

DH just reminded it was him who went to the supermarket cos I couldn't be bothered and he worked shifts. He now wants to know if the following still exist:
Sainsburys on Kensington High Street
Safeways / Morrisons at Barbican and Roman Road
Asda on Isle of Dogs

My DM is round and just asked if I didn't do all my shopping at F&M Grin

Glasgow is bursting with amusement that the posh kids of East Ren managed to have a rammy in the Park on the back of their exam results. No non edgy bits here.

Needmoresleep · 11/08/2018 14:25

Bubbles, do you live in Zone 1? Streets are busier, there is more security, Westminster particularly act on street drinking, and I dont recall seeing open drug dealing in our local park. (Though no doubt it happens.)

We all have different attitudes to risk. Your buzzy might be my edgy. This does not mean I am wrong. You were just a braver parent. OP needs to work out her priorities for herself.
