Is there such a thing as sexy (affordable) lino?

I like patterns and colours, the Cath Kidstin stuff appeals and I've just received some samples of this, which I love, but it's all pretty expensive.
Any thoughts on where I could be looking?

Many thanks

@BirthdayKake I love that, where is it from ☺️

LlamaPyjamas · 09/08/2018 09:03

We looked at Amtico but it was the same price as stone floor tiles so we didn’t bother. If we could have got a decent lino cheaper than tiles we would have done. But ultimately we didn’t see the point of paying the same price for plastic as stone.

I got some lovely mid grey vinyl tile effect lino from carpets for less for my bathroom - love it!

BubblesBuddy · 09/08/2018 09:12

The cost of laying vinyl is way cheaper than putting down tiles or stone. Also, if you see a floor you love, but then buy something cheap and cheerful but not really what you want, it will always feel second best. You will regret it. Don’t spoil the ship for a ha’peth of tar!

The cost per m2 doesn’t add up to a huge amount when you put the fitting and prep cost on top.

It’s not Fecking Lino if it’s made of vinyl!!
Sorry, I’m over invested in people’s floorimg terminology but they are very different things
It’s not like calling a Dyson vac a Hoover, it’s more like calling a steam cleaner a Hoover to try and give an example - probably not a great one.
I would hate someone who wants vinyl to end up ordering a load of Lino by mistake. Linoleum and Marmoleum (which a PP has) are lovely but have fitting and maintenance issues Vinyl doesn’t.

Anyway, I hope you all end up with lovely floors

We were quoted £90 per square metre for Amtico (£40 for floor prep plus £50 for the actual material and installation). Tiling the floor with natural stone cost £50 per square metre all inclusive.

frankly it was just from Carpet Express :)

@meladeso It’s called Silt by Little Greene

Flashingbeacon · 09/08/2018 13:53

Before i faint with excitement, what goes under vinyl. We have the worst cheap rough floorboards with gaps you could drop and small child through. Am I going to be paying as much to get it laid?
Cause now I’m heart set on it. My gran had vinyl put down recently and it’s horroble and bubbly. I now believe it can be done better.

meladeso · 09/08/2018 14:01

MillyMolly123 that is already on my list! Fantastic. It looks fab. Thanks.

That’s why it was cheaper for me to get stone tiles. The floor has to be flat before you lay vinyl otherwise you’ll see every tiny bump. Floor prep was quoted at the same price as the actual vinyl flooring, thus doubling the cost. Tiling was cheaper because the floor didn’t need to be prepped to be perfectly flat.

Our fitters just laid a subfloor (possibly mdf or ply?) over the floorboards and installed the LTV straight on top. It did take a full day to lay around 5 square metres, so labour really does add to the final bill.

If you’re feeling brave Harvey Maria have fitting instructions on their website, I’ve read a few reviews written by people who’ve fitted it themselves saying it’s not difficult.

MillyMolly123 · 09/08/2018 19:51

LVT even Smile

But it’s so beautiful. It’s been my lifelong dream since i saw it on this thread.
I’ll get a few quotes and calm myself down.

My neighbour has "wooden flooring effect" vinyl throughout her place. I was shocked when she told me - I've visited several times and would never have guessed it wasn't real wood

She got hers from Carpetright. Thought I'd have a look at their website, as I need hallway and kitchen vinyl. They've a big range numerous styles, advice guides, and can send you free samples too.

SunnyUpNorth · 09/08/2018 21:49

Our fitter just put a sheet of plywood on top of the rickety old floorboards and laid on top of that. Our fitting was v quick but it was a small area.

WatermelonGlitter · 09/08/2018 22:04

In my experience Carpet Right fitters aren't great.
