Wood paintwork drying 'rough' to the touch

I am currently decorating and using Valspar paint for woodwork - the silk version rather than gloss. I have used it before to good effect and I am having it mixed to farrow and ball colours to 'fit in' with farrow and ball paint elsewhere.

However, this time it is drying 'rough' to the touch although it does not look too bad, maybe a bit brush stroke. Obviously in this heat it is drying fast, so I am taking care not to go over the area too much. Is the heat the problem? Too much dust in the atmosphere? - I have done lots of sanding. I am at a bit of a loss. This is a first coat and I sanded prior to painting and then washed the paintwork down.

Thank in advance for any advice!

When you go on YouTube, a lot of tutorials recommend sanding between coats for this very reason.

Maybe you've been lucky before, but I've certainly never been able to paint woodwork without sanding with a medium or fine grit sandpaper and carefully rubbing down with a damp cloth before leaving to dry between coats.

OK thanks - but won't the final coat also come out 'rough' to the touch as I had sanded this down and washed too. So I will need to sand the topcoat? Wonder what I did different previously!

I suspect because it's so dry and has been hot for an extended period that the moisture levels in the wood are lower than they have been when you've painted before. The wood might be sucking up the moisture from the paint and this is raising the grain more noticeably. Other than sanding more and giving another coat I'm not sure what you can do.

Thanks. Maybe I should have been a bit more explicit - this is on paintwork that has previously been painted, so I am painting onto sanded paint and so far, I have given it one new coat.

I gather that but still think the heat and moisture levels could be at play.

Yes, I think you must be right. Thanks. Still, lower temps in a day or two!
