Vented tumble dryer

Does anyone have one they would recommend? We need to get one to replace our current condenser dryer as it will be going behind a cupboard door and apparently this isn’t safe for condenser dryers. So vented it is. But these really don’t seem that popular any more and there aren’t many available. Samsung don’t even make one at all that I can see. Are they rubbish? Does anyone have a good one?

Thanks.

You don’t have to have vented. You can have a heat pump integrated one. More expensive to buy and the drying takes longer. You can get A rated ones though. I would personally ditch the door and have something that’s the bees knees! My Miele falls into that category.

frugi · 05/08/2018 21:16

Thanks, an integrated heat pump one is a good idea. We just wanted them hidden because they’re in a kitchen/dining room so we wanted them to be unobtrusive.

I have a White Knight vented one, it's very good. It's my second one, first lasted 20 odd years.

frenchfancy · 05/08/2018 21:41

Vented are good. Don't buy a Candy. They are very noisy. Bosch are my preference.

CanYouHearThePeopleSing · 05/08/2018 21:41

I've got a great beko one. It's a sensor one so it knows when everything is dry. I'd go vented every time- much less to go wrong!

AveEldon · 05/08/2018 21:52

Bosch are good
White Knight simple but cheap and will go for years if you don't overload them

mum2015 · 06/08/2018 10:43

I have a John Lewis heat pump dryer but it releases too much steam and fluff around it. Can someone suggest a dryer that doesn't release steam and fluff.

BubblesBuddy · 06/08/2018 12:32

There are far fewer integrated machines to choose from. My Miele releases the condensed water into the drains. It is plumbed in to do that. No steam, no fluff - it just works. Integrated gives lots of problems in that it is heat pump or hose. Where will the hose go? If you cannot vent to an outside wall, then its a problem. Neither are satisfactory.

If it is in a kitchen dining area, then you do need to consider noise too. Sometimes a good quiet machine is less noisy than a cheap one behind a door. I also have lots of features on mine and, because it is efficient, it is on for less time. Why do you not have a better machine and run it at night or when you go out? I would not really bother about noise if you need to run the thing for 3 hours!

BubblesBuddy · 06/08/2018 12:36

John Lewis sell a Hoover integrated. One machine out of 91 online. Is there a Bosch one even available?

frugi · 06/08/2018 13:01

Thanks for the replies. The general consensus does seem to be that vented are good and easy though I can see you don't feel that way BubblesBuddy!

John Lewis have 14 vented tumble dryers and 1 heat pump but I do see what you mean and I was just thinking the same thing, that they don't seem to be as popular any more. Miele make 2 vented tumble dryers although if I'm being honest I would prefer not to pay Miele prices for something as simple as a tumble dryer.

It's apparently not really safe to go out and leave a tumble dryer on - I have done it before but try not to now - at night is a possibility but again I'd prefer not to as I just like getting my laundry done during the day.

Which Miele model do you have which you like so much? We do have an external wall so the vent wouldn't be an issue at all, but I'm interested to know how yours is plumbed in exactly as I hadn't realised that you could pipe other sorts. Who plumbed it in? Or is it just a matter of pointing the pipe into an external drain?

There is a Bosch one, yes:

I can't figure out how to edit my post but it doesn't need to be specifically sold as an integrated dryer - just a vented one, as apparently any vented dryer can safely be put behind a door whereas a heat pump or condensor one, apparently, can't, because of the heat generated. I appreciate the doors are an aesthetic issue that not everyone would choose but we are 99% sure it's the best option for us.

Worth noting try that Which? does not recommend any of the Whirlpool group tumble dryers as one was responsible for starting a fire in a tower block. Guess which I had! Took ages to get the company to come out an adapt it.

frugi · 06/08/2018 13:57

Yep - a terrifying number of tumble dryers apparently have (or hopefully had) a propensity to catch fire. So many were recalled. What a pain for you.

OP posts:
whataboutbob · 06/08/2018 14:00

Yes it was a pain! I believe there is a Miele vented one which has top marks on Which?

terfterf · 06/08/2018 14:44

White Knight vented drier every time!!
Cheap, British, and you can buy all the spare parts for it really easily and cheaply (ours had a new door last year)

bilbodog · 06/08/2018 14:48

Ive got a vented bosch - had it for years with no problems.

DramaAlpaca · 06/08/2018 14:49

I bought a vented Bosch a couple of years ago & I really rate it, it's great.

It took ages to find a decent vented one though as they don't seem to be as popular any more. I wanted a vented as that's what I had previously and I thought we might as well reuse the hole in the wall!

allthatmalarkey · 06/08/2018 15:54

I bought an AEG one about 5 years ago. Same group as Bosch, but not Bosch. I have had 2 Bosch washers and dishwashers and had to suffer some other brands until they died, eg
In rented accommodation or when I first moved into my own flats/houses. The Bosches have all be awesome. The AEG is fine, but it's noisy and the timer isn't as flexible as I'd like (I use timers a lot on my white goods). When it goes I will be getting a Bosch next. I will go Bosch all the way for the rest of my life now.
Incidentally, their family charity does awesome work in the fields of education, international development and promoting peace so I'm happy to give them my money.

NotDavidTennant · 06/08/2018 15:57

How are you planning to vent it?

frugi · 06/08/2018 16:07

Through an external wall.

Bosch seem like a really popular choice!

Bubbles buddy,
The heat pump dryer I have can also be plumbed to drain. Which Miele dryer do you have? I really don't like all the fluff !!!
