Noise in 50s/60s ex-LA houses

We're moving into a house which I think is 1960s or late 50s ex-LA. It's not halls adjoining, so living rooms are side by side. I'm getting slightly nervous about noise! If you live in an ex LA semi from the same era, how has it been for you? We currently live in a Victorian terrace and hear EVERYTHING. We can't actually use one of our rooms because it is so loud. So I am a bit paranoid!

TIA

Ours is amazing, you can't hear ANYTHING. It's 50s, brick walls throughout and even though it's half the size (literally) of our previous house it's much quieter. I occasionally hear the neighbour's music if it's up really really loud and our house is empty apart from me (once a week or less), but other than that i don't hear anything, and we are terraced.

Yeah.... ex-La 50's build with stair cases adjoining.

It is pretty bad for sound transfer TBH.

We have an ex council 60s semi. Brick walls throughout and hear nothing at all. Love it

you can always put up a soundproof wall out of metal studding and plasterboard ( soundbloc ) with acoustic insulation behind , very quick and cost effective and it does work

Ours is 1950s but not ex council. Brick build. Definitely had to get sound proofing. The living rooms join.

We live in an ex-LA 1960's maisonette. Sound proofing is amazing. Don't hear a peep from the neighbours above or next door.

We have back to back living rooms in a 1950s ex council house.

Pretty quiet apart from when they are gaming loudly at midnight.

My DM moved into a 1960s semi (not LA) very typical of the building style of the time, after my father died and she wanted smaller garden and low maintenance. It was living rooms and bedrooms adjoining and the sound transference was awful - I felt sorry for the lovely new neighbours as my DM had never lived in anything but detached and was going slightly deaf so was not sensitive to the noise she was making. I did persuade her that having the radio on until the shipping forecast at full pitch was not kind to someone who was having to get up for early nursing shifts so she used earphones.

My Victorian terrace is very quiet, though - just the occasional sound from plugs being switched on at sockets !

My semi is 50/60 ex council and it is much better than my previous 1930s semi.
I have 2 noisy kids and so does nextdoor. Yes I hear them every now and again. But in last place I could hear everything!
Living room adjoined.

BernieCliftonsDressingRoom · 03/08/2018 15:33

Quite a mix then!

I don't mind hearing a bit of noise, that's life. In our current place we can hear EVERYTHING - normal volume conversations, sneezing, sex, music. I couldn't cope with that

I miss mine! I lived in a 1960s ex LA semi for 7 years and barely heard anything, and the family next door were a big, loud (not in a bad way, just noisy not offensive or anything) family of 8 (when girlfriends moved in).

I now live in a new build detached and hear more from my sodding neighbours than I ever did in my lovely old house Sad

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/08/2018 18:24

A dd has a 1950s end of terrace. Dh and I stay now and then and I've never heard a peep downstairs (living rooms adjoining) and very occasionally something faint upstairs. There's a family with children there, too.

IMO such houses are often far better built than so many newbuilds nowadays.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/08/2018 18:25

An ex LA end of terrace, that should have read.

Mines 1970 ex council semi. Next door have lots of young kids and I didn't even realise as barely hear anything unless they are enjoying the garden! I was surprised (in a good way)
