Composite door questions

Hi

Got a rather ratty UPVC door with bog basic cylinders - I'm thinking of upgrading to anti-drill, anti-everything burglars can do to a cylinder to drill it pick it or bash it out so they can break in and steal your car keys. You're looking updwards of £50 for such a cylinder, a really high quality high security one so no drama's there.

But the door leaks slightly and I also fancy having a keyless entry lock such as the Yale smartlock but am just baulking at the price!

Composite doors seem SO bloody EXPENSIVE! I mean, I know they're better than UPVC but crikey, they're just - so expensive!

Everest are doing a deal where you get the smart lock 'for free' when you buy one of their composite doors (I'm quite sure it's not 'for free' but has been figured into their pricing).

Has anyone got good suggestions for composite door retailers (I'm finding they're all about £650 just for the glazed door) but the more 'budget' (and I use the term loosely) composite door firms don't give you the option to price up with a smart lock (at most it's a high security cylinder).

Any help or advice and will Everest represent a massively inflated total price just to include the smart lock anyway??

I avoided composite doors because they are so secure that if there was a fire, the fire people wouldn't be able to bash the door down to rescue us.

I love the idea of a smart lock. I looked into it and it's not as simple as the advert you linked said it was. You need to buy a part to put in the handle to connect it with the WiFi and then a hub to transmit the messages to your phone when you're out. You can still open it with blue tooth without these extra parts, but virtual keys and remote unlocking require the hub etc.

Yes and sadly the ratings for the app which works with this lock are rubbish. Until I saw them coming up to 4 stars (from the 2 - 3 stars they are now) I have decided I wouldn't buy one at this time. Shame, cos I really would love to not have keys that you have to physically shove into the lock any more. We don't really have any visitors who we know and trust enough that they could be given electronic access so not sure if I'd really need that feature so might not need the hub. When I started looking at people's comments on the app about spare keys, there seemed to be some costs attached which they'd not expected and which seemed a bit unfair to them. I'm holding fire on everything at the minute as I can't really even afford to change up my cylinders never made an electronic keyless door lock!

Don't you think a smart lock will be 'hackable' ? They can do it with cars so why not houses.

Would rather have a proper key lock anyday!

I honestly don't know FloorLamp!

Good idea to look at the app ratings. That's put me right off! Who wants to be locked out of their house because the app is in a bad mood and won't comply?! The worst bit was finding out that you have to pay £5 per virtual key. That's like selling you a calculator and charging you per sum!

DoinItForTheKids · 19/08/2018 02:45

Exactly! That charge is utterly ridiculous.
