Are you meant to get a copy of the deeds when you buy a house?

Just asking, as we have just bought our first house. Not been given a copy of the deeds by the solicitor-is this standard practice?

I wanted to check if a patch of grass by our drive is ours or not

The deeds are officially deposited with the Land Registry. You can get copies of them for a fee. Your solicitor likely also kept a copy so I would try that first.

Originally, deeds were held by the mortgage company and sent to you when the mortgage was paid off. Now, as PP stated they are on the land registry website.

During your conveyancing, you should have been given a copy of the title and the title plan (with the previous owners names). You can look at this to see if the patch of grass by your drive is yours or not. The red outline is your plot.

Once the registration is completed, you would get a copy of the deeds from your solicitor - unless this was an optional extra that they may a charge for.

Land Registry

Take a look here. For £3 you can download a copy of the title plan showing what land belongs to your property.

If you have only just bought the house it can take around three months for your names to show on the Land Registry documents.
