Help me decide Dh doesn't care and no one else to give an opinion

I am trying to order tiles for our little bathroom. it is an L shape. The tiles come in 3 different sizes.

30x60 - fit well (I need 90cm width in one direction) but I feel weird about rectangle, perhaps unjustly, may be rectangles are fine....
60x60 - a nice size but just don't fit the space well (see prev. point about being 90cm in one direction)
100 x 100 - would look A MAZE ING and only have 4 joins so even better BUT they cost twice as much. literally £500 instead of £250. That's £250 I won't have to spend on other things

I'm going back and forth and don't know what to do

Anyone sway me in any direction???

oh and to complicate things the particular pattern of the tiles kind of looks good with joins but obvs fewer joins can only be a good thing

Have you accounted for grouting in between the tiles in your measurements? Do you want a particular layout of tiles?

If you're not keen on rectangular tiles them don't have them. Very large tiles can be difficult to accurately cut to size and very expensive if one gets broken. Plus they are heavy so tricky to put up on a wall.

wowfudge · 24/07/2018 16:19

Post a picture of the tiles!

namechangedtoday15 · 24/07/2018 17:04

I would get the largest ones you can. They look so much nicer without grout lines. Obviously check with fitter that weight won't be an issue but get the AMAZING ones - what's £250 when you will use the gorgeous bathroom every day for years Grin. Eat beans on toast for a couple of months Grin. Larger format tiles will make the bathroom look bigger, less grout lines to clean (as well as looking nicer) and no rectangles Grin

Haint · 24/07/2018 19:25

these are they you see the difference between abutting tiles looks kinda cool.

Namechange you sound just like me in my more caution to the wind moments

Are you going to be staying in the house for years? If so, get the best you can (reasonably) afford. 250 isn't that much - you can recoup it before Christmas if you budget well.

If 250 absolutely breaks the bank, then no, you can't afford it.

But do check that they will work well for weight/cutting/placement etc.

wowfudge · 24/07/2018 19:31

Go with the smaller squares - you won't get the full effect with the large ones if it's a small room.

Haint · 24/07/2018 20:06

But the smaller squares don’t work, it’s have to be rectangles [wail]

OP posts:
wowfudge · 24/07/2018 20:08

I disagree - you get more of the effect. You'll just have to change the dimensions of the room to accommodate more whole tiles then.

SwedishEdith · 24/07/2018 20:13

Are they going on every wall? Maybe just put on 2 walls? Think I agree that the effect of the big ones will be lost in a small space.

Racecardriver · 24/07/2018 20:14

Those tiles look nice on a wall but they will look really awful in a tiny bathroom. In your place I would keep looking.

namechangedtoday15 · 24/07/2018 20:17

Those tiles are beautiful but i agree that the different sizes give a very different effect. The large ones are more of an industrial effect which might be lost in a small bathroom.

Having said that, if you can pull back the £250 somewhere else, go with what you love.

Haint · 24/07/2018 20:25

Should’ve said. They’re for the floor. And no, I can’t change the dimensions of the room

The main dilemma (though there are a few!) is that I prefer squares but the square tile is 60x60. A significant part of the room is 90cm wide thus a 60cn tile just doesn’t work. Too many cuts, too much wastage, lack of symmetry

The obvious answer is to go with the rectangles who being 30cm (30 into 90 =3 abreast) actually work very well

I just can’t quite imagine rectangles. I have irrational dislike

Whereas the giant ones, would fit very nicely 3 along and one down (it’s an L shape) - job done. Minimal grout lines, fit well, minimal cutting necessary. But do cost £££££ and perhaps some of the beauty comes from the pattern created by different tiles next to one another.

I’ve overthought haven’t I Blush

SwedishEdith · 24/07/2018 20:38

Yes, can't you mix and match?

SockMatchmaker · 24/07/2018 20:40

Could you have a 60cm one in the middle and cut up other tiles to make a 15cm border around the edges? Amazing tiles btw!

TheChatsPyjamas · 24/07/2018 20:43

Down the 90cm but could they be cut so the seam is down the middle? So 45x60?

BrazzleDazzleDay · 24/07/2018 20:44

Let's be honest Haint you didn't need anyone else's opinion, you've already set your heart on the giant expensive ones Wink

They look like they would ness with your eyes though

Haint · 24/07/2018 20:52

I can’t bare it. It’s too difficult. Why won’t stupid fucking DH have a fucking opinion????

OP posts:
Stinkerbelldust · 24/07/2018 20:54

I reckon those are going to date pretty fast. I'd go with whatever's cheapest.

Loopytiles · 24/07/2018 20:58

Big tiles, even floor ones, can look bad in a little bathroom.

Loopytiles · 24/07/2018 20:59

The first ones (rectangles) would be best.

Haint · 24/07/2018 21:10

Ah but Loopy they’re SO big that they won’t even look like tiles. That’s the very thing. Though I think you might be right that rectangles are perfectly lovely and may look just as good.

And I don’t care about dating. I like colour and textures and beautiful things and to me these are beautiful. No grey walls and metro tiles for me thankyouverymuch

OP posts:
cakeandteajustforme · 24/07/2018 21:25

The 1m tiles are probably a tilers nightmare to cut as they tend to get thicker with size. What if he chips one? You'll need to buy another. Then your budget will be really blown. So don't get the big ones, sounds like a bad financial decision even with no wastage.

I'd go with the rectangles personally. Or do what a pp suggested and a 60cm centred with 15cm strips on each side.

wowfudge · 24/07/2018 21:37

I said that about the bigger tiles earlier. Don't put them on the floor - those are meant to be properly on show on the wall.
