Dripping Taps - Collar Stuck <Piglet John? Waves>

I have a dripping tap. Actually all 4 sets of taps are dripping. All Twyford (now fucking discontinued style). Now all just out of the 5 year guarantee. All blooody ceramic valve ones.

I have tried and tried to get the collar off to see if I can get replacement valves/ceramic washery bits. Even if I can soak existing valve-bits to de-scale and see if that fixes the drips. But I cannot. Have used tape. Have used a strap wrench. Have used an adjustable spanner with "soft grips" The collars on the taps I have tried are stuck fast. I am loath to attack the other taps in case I ruin the chrome on them too.

Plumber came round. He could not remove either - well one came undone but with the valves still inside and the chrome of the collar totally fucked. He stopped trying anymore as this made us realise that the part we were told to get to replace the valve were the wrong ones anyway.

I just need to get the collars off. To see if I can fix the taps or if I need to replace the whole sodding lot (including for the bath which is fully tiled in )

Does anyone please, please, please have a magic hint as to how to removed trick collars?

Have you tried contacting Twyfords for advice?

AnyOtherUserName · 25/07/2018 14:54

Yep. Twyford bought by Geberit... Tap obsolete. They have nothing left (apart from an inaccurate parts list). They tried to help re parts but they couldn't do muchore than refer me to the parts manufacturers. Who, without the correct part number cannot do much. Unless I can get the collars off, take a photo of the valve and they maybe able to sort replacement with something compatible.

So I come back round to getting the tap collars off (without ruining the chrome)

☹️

You could try Lunns

(tap specialist)

Sorry, on phone, no link

Hi, Just popped back to say that I finally got my arse in gear and got it sorted.

Bath taps - Lunns had the cartridges - so thank you @pigletjohn My plumber managed to get the collars off these and replace them, thanks in part to me drenching them in WD40 for the previous 12 hours!

All the sink taps I just replaced. To be honest 3 sets of Bristan taps probably were cheaper/the same price than 6 replacement cartridges Mixed in with the fact the fact the collars were still corroded on and we couldn't find the cartridges - replacement taps just ticked the box. So in the main bathroom the taps on the bath don't quite match the ones on the sink - but they are very similar in style so I can live with it.

And for the first time in months I went for a wee without the sound of dripping taps - it was bliss!
