Buyers Remorse

Me and my partner moved into our new house on Thursday just gone. After being here for a few hours I realise how noisy the road is from the nearby M1. We are about 150 meters from the road. There is a constant drone when we have the windows open. To be honest it does sound like the sea, and if it was I would love it. Knowing that it is traffic makes me feel sick to my stomach. My partner is not bothered by it at all. I have mentioned it to all the parents and in laws, but they say it's not that bad, I will get use to it and not notice it anymore, they have live in similar areas apparently. I really don't know what to do, do you think I can get used to it? I have become obsessed with a decibel meter and constantly measuring the sound. Outside it is only 35db which is the same as a quiet library apparently. With windows closed it is only 25db and I can't hear the road. I am thinking I will have to put the house back on the market, but am I going to have trouble selling, unless I can find someone as stupid as me?

There's a lot of posts like these at the moment about buyers regretting their houses purchases. Do you think you would get your money back if you put it up for sale? How long had it been on the market when you made your offer?

Don't worry. You are just noticing it because it is new. Your brain will quickly zone it out into general background noise that you don't register. Also, unfortunately, most of the year you will be inside with windows closed! You've probably got the windows, and maybe doors, open or are in the garden a lot just now because of freak good weather!

I bought a house in a county park but only 2 miles from an airport. When we first bought it I built it up in my mind to the point where I was basically thinking I was under the main runway at Heathrow but in reality I notice a plane just a few times a week if that.

Give it time and if you still don't like it in a while you will sell x

You are only 150 metres from the M1, but you didn't notice the noise before? How many times did you view the property? I'm sorry, I find this a bit hard to swallow.

As the proportion of electric cars rises, the sound will diminish.

I'm currently considering a bargain property near a busy road as an investment.

I viewed the house a couple of times and my worry of the noise meant I drove and sat outside the house for ages listening to the noise. The house I grew up in was closer to the a5 duel carriage way in Milton Keynes and it was never an issue for me. I figured it would be exactly the same. Now I am in this house it seams a much bigger issue for me.

Apparently there is pressure for electric cars to emit a loud artificial engine noise so that blind people can hear them coming. And a lot of the noise on fast roads is form the tires on the road.

Feel for you with this. We are almost at completion on our house after renting for 12 years! when we moved into our current house I cried for 3 nights as we live near a private members club and although the road is quiet the first 2 nights we were here they had gigs on and I could hear "pub noises". I was gutted! 6 years on it becomes an occasional annoyance and I will be glad to leave but you do get used to it. I have a fan on every night as the road is so quiet I cant sleep! I would like the noise of a monotomous motorway - try and think of it that way. Imagine the people on that road travelling to see their loved ones and enjoy the fact you are safe and sound at home.

That's interesting to know Sophie.

OP I live very near a station. I honestly don't notice the trains at all after the first week.

You will get used to it. My parents live near a busy road and happily have all their doors /windows open and don't even think about it! There was no road noise when they moved into that house 22 years ago, it's steadily built up over the years. So even if you moved to a quieter location you can't guarantee it will always be quiet!!

FWIW having lived with both road noise and in a flight path, I can say that road noise is infinitely preferable to plane noise 😉
