We have just completed on our house yesterday we finally got the keys from our seller at around 4pm The whole place has been left dirty marks on walls etc which I can cope with however I’ve gone out to the garden and she’s taken all the flowers from the borders and believe it or not the 8ft x 8ft deck I’m shock the garden looks so ugly and I’m left with lots of rubble outside my patio doors. I called my solicitor and he was busy but will look into it first thing Monday. I just don’t know what to say, who takes their decking????? I’m so upset and angry right now..

Your seller should have filled out a form saying what was included in the sale. In it, it should have been clear if the flowers and decking were staying or going.

I totally agree with you though - who removes decking. Insane!

Completionmisery · 21/07/2018 10:26

It didn’t state which flowers so knew some were going, the decking though it said nothing about it at all. My solicitor said they have said it was floating so not fixed to anything. it said nothing on the fitting form about it either not something I expected at all I mean who would ?!?!?

I wouldn't cry too much over the decking. It was a fad that has now gone out of fashion. Even Alan Titchmarsh, the decking king, now regrets his previous enthusiasm. It's pretty nasty to remove the flowers though.

While I appreciate it's not nice I honestly think that not having the decking is a blessing. Yes, you'll have to do some work you weren't expecting on the garden, but decking is something I've always hated. I'd be more concerned that they weren't careful when moving their stuff out and have marked all the walls.

ShowOfHands · 21/07/2018 12:46

I'd be glad the decking was gone tbh.

I will likely take some of my flowers with me when I go. I grew most of them from seed and have worked very hard to make it beautiful. I like the idea of taking some of my old garden with me when I move to a new one. I'd leave it presentable and wouldn't take everything however. It's not that weird is it?

I've never sold in UK, only abroad. But I have never heard anything as crazy as digging up plants to take with you. People buy based on what the house and garden look like, removing things like decks, plants, shelving, curtain poles is madness and only makes the new owners resent you, and you look a bit batshit.
When we sell this house (first UK one) anything attached to a wall, or planted in the garden stays. Shelves, fitted wardrobes, ceiling roses. I hope our next house is left in the state we view it, and not ripped apart so they can take a few plants and bits with them.

RangerLady · 21/07/2018 15:53

I don't think it's that unusual to take plants (though I don't really know how you'd do it without killing a lot of them!), the bloke we bought our house from did as some had "sentimental value ". However we knew about it in advance! All this stuff should have been accounted for on the questionnaires they filled in for solicitors. We have just done one for ours - we are leaving the plants including a tree that was an anniversary gift!
Sorry for your disappointment, try and think at least you get to choose your own garden scheme now. You can grow or acquire plants very cheaply.

sleepingbaby1125 · 21/07/2018 20:33

Odd and rude to take all the flowers! I took the things in pots and took some cuttings of plants I liked and some plants that divide (eg wild strawberries, wild primroses, saxifrage, lambs ears), but nothing that would have been noticeable! Didn't put anything on form, just assumed the garden was part of the house.
Taking decking is barmy, but ultimately you'll be happier with a nice patio.

Decking attracts rats!! My friend is a builder and makes a vast amount of money ripping out and laying patios!! He said 90% of decking has rats underneath Sad. But yes ring your solicitor too many people get away with this crap.

emdude · 22/07/2018 08:14

Wow! Our vendor has said they're taking their living room carpet, but decking is a whole other level. Surely if they've left it in a state worse than what you viewed it at then you have some come back?!
