How much is "a drink" to a builder?

A builder came to plaster our ceiling. He knows we haven't got much money. He said he had an unused front door which had been in his shed for a few years, which we could have "for a drink". How much should we offer him? I don't want to offend him by being mean.

I would be thinking £20, or could you stretch to £25?

FabulousSophie · 17/07/2018 06:10

Probably a fiver.

BertieBotts · 17/07/2018 06:11

Buy him a six pack of beer?

Vitalogy · 17/07/2018 06:16

I'd go with £20 or a pack of beer.

FabulousSophie · 17/07/2018 07:20

The door might be a complete load of rubbish. I'd take a look at it first, before paying him anything to take away his useless cr*p.

heartshapedpositnotes · 17/07/2018 11:24

£20

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 17/07/2018 19:54

I doubt it’s a fiver! I reckon it’s a night down the pub, so probably around £50?
Make sure the door is worth it...

WTFdidwedo · 17/07/2018 19:55

£50!? Bloody hell, how many drinks do you have on a normal pub night? I'd say £20 max.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 17/07/2018 19:59

Well no, I wouldn’t, and maybe he wouldn’t either. I’m just saying be prepared Grin
I actually hate being put in that position; I’d make him name a price.

matchingpjs · 17/07/2018 20:03

I’ve always given £20 for a drink in cases such as this

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 17/07/2018 20:04

Where I live that would be a bottle of whisky.

OK, I will go with the majority here and offer £20. Assuming we like the door!

id get him a £10 crate of beer or a bottle of something. so £10-£15

HollowTalk · 18/07/2018 12:15

The door might not actually be any good, OP, if it's been stored badly.

FabulousSophie · 18/07/2018 12:47

It might be a bargain at £10-20, if it is a nice solid antique pine door. But on the other hand, it might be cheap modern tat. If it is good old door, I'd compare prices at a reclamation yard to see if you are getting a bargain or not.

EdWinchester · 18/07/2018 19:24

Don’t give £5 as someone suggested. That’s just tight.

£20 is ok.

FabulousSophie · 23/07/2018 15:48

Did you buy the door? Was it worth a drink?
