How to organise a new bathroom on a budget

Hi all,

Just moved into our first house, the bathroom is desperate to be replaced but we are on a tight budget. I think we can chip off all the tiles (floor to ceiling on half the room) and remove the existing furniture. I can also easily buy tiles, shower, sink, bath, taps, loo etc etc but how do you arrange the install? (We are planning to put things back where they are now but a lot less tiles as it’s a v big bathroom, only addition might be a shower cubicle rather than one over the bath but that’s cost dependant)

There will be plastering, tiling, plumbing, electrical etc, this will surely need to be done by numerous tradesmen and me where possible but how do you know who what and when? Where do you start getting a quote for it all?

I know I could go to some kind of one stop bathroom shop and sink £5-£6k and sit back and relax but our budget is more like £2.5k so we need to organise this independently.

Any advice would be very appreciated!!!

You could diy it all. We have on previous bathrooms for that sort of budget

After buying plain, average furniture and tiles alone you managed to spend £2.5k? Hmm

How much are you expecting to pay for shower cubicle, shower tray, shower, bath, sink, taps, waste, toilet, flooring, tiles, plaster, paint...? I think you will do well to come in under 2k on materials

Plus skip?

If you are going for anything nice like a vanity, nicer taps or tiles, you will easily spend 2.5k. Especially in a large bathroom. It’s all the little extras like this and grout, adhesive, pipes that really add up before you know it sadly

Where abouts in the country are you? Costs for trades vary hugely. Qs is good for standard basic bits. Don't buy cheap taps as you will end up having to replace them much quicker. I also wouldnt buy a cheap bath if you are using it to shower in as it will be wobbly and will break faster.

We have just redone our bathroom. We spent a bit more than your budget but we went for top of the range digital shower and bath filler, expensive feature taps etc.

We had quotes of over £15k from bathroom firms but actually spent about £4.5k. We bought all the materials ourselves. We paid a local plumber who organised the right trades to:

  • Rip out all existing fittings and tiles
  • Redo the boxing in to make it beater and less intrusive
  • make good and roughly replaster the walls do the new tiles look
  • fully tile the walls
  • fit all bathroom goods, shower screen etc,

The finish is amazing. Find a local tradesman you trust to run the job for you. Cheaper and better quality finish.

Thanks all,

Thinking around £1k for furniture and £1.5 for labour and anything outside of that we will do ourselves e.g. ripping out and getting rid etc.

I am based in the black country, a colleague at work the other day had his bathroom fitted for £1500 including ripping out, he bought the furniture online so I was planning to do the same.

Neglected to realise the cost of tiles and floor but it will be v basic and not floor to ceiling and was thinking a nice lino for the floor (if such thing exists!!
