Persimmon new builds?

We’re looking to buy our first home soon in a particular area, we’ve seen a few houses that we liked but didn’t love. It just so happens that there’s a new development being built currently that will be ready by the time we’re ready to move (still got a little bit of saving up to do for the deposit) but not sure about a new build as this isn’t something we considered. Does anyone have any experience with Persimmon or just new builds in general? Any pros and cons of buying a new build as opposed to a older house? Smile

The silence is deafening

Not Persimmon but we bought a new build with Taylor Wimpey. The only reason we went for a new build was to get a house in the area we wanted and the best solution was part-exchanging our old property. The general standard of workmanship is shoddy, we had a 5 page snag list that 2 years down the line still has items that need sorting. Customer service is terrible. We have had several leaks, one that would have caused a lot of damage if we hadn’t come home when we did. I love the village and the area but hate new builds just as much as I knew I would 😂

I'm in Scotland and a good friend worked for Persimmons customer after care. It very much depended on the builders that were employed, one estate had very little issues but the other one was appalling, he said that he had no idea how some of the houses got signed off as complete, an en suite shower wasn't connected to waste pipes, huge gaps around the windows, staircases not properly fitted.

Don’t would be my advice.

Yes ago I bought a Barrett box, I loved it but you pay a premium for new build and because they are new you have to provide everything, fortunately my parents came and offered advice so I got 6 foot fence all round but most neighbours got these odd fences made from a couple of bits of wood. But just
Putting shelves in cupboards, toilet roll holders, curtain rail back garden turf, put in by my Dad cost £500 20 years ago on a 2 bed house.
And the snagging oh my god! The problems I had with my boiler and patio doors my neighbour saved my sanity on that her brother had been an apprentice and apparently who ever out my plumbing in as a severally hung over apprentice joints leaked all over the house, boiler couldn't draw, they had to rip up the carpet (they glue it down) and I had the devils own job getting them to replace it because they said it was my responsibility not theirs... they did eventually. Then the best bit my patio doors just never really shut well and they sent round this man who was about 6fot 7 and 25 stone to prove to me it was fine, I watched him lift it and pull, jump it over the lip and lock it and say with a straight face "see
Nothing wrong! It's a knack" again neighbours brother gave the missing info my patio door had been stolen the night before I moved in and they had to hastily replace it.... yes stolen someone had carefully chipped it out! The mind boggles
They also tend to be small. Plus side they really design them well no
Wasted space, energy efficient, look lovely, no one else's bad taste to put right. Fairly maintenance free

Persimmon estate here - so many buyers had so much trouble. It was heartbreaking. ( in our town I mean)

We have just moved into our second new build (not Persimmon). We've been in a month, we've had some snags which are to be expected but they are quick to respond and resolve the queries and there hasn't been anything that has been horrific (think flush on toilet not working properly, paint work needing touching up). Our first home was similar, no problems really and neighbours didn't seem to have any either.

That said, I would stay clear of Persimmon, they have a generally bad reputation for build quality and customer service.

I’m sure there is a Don’t buy from Persimmon FB page, have a look

Thank you all for your replies, sounds like I will be doing a bit more research and more than likely staying clear of Persimmon! Much appreciated

Things to be aware of- room sizes, sometimes new builds have 'special' furniture in the show homes which is smaller than normal, to fit in and make the rooms look more spacious. Also with the gardens... I viewed one new build which a sales office and and garden was a nice size, turns out they had fenced round two of the gardens side by side, I wouldn't have realised how small they were as the rest of the plots weren't marked out
