Selling a house - paint it or no?

We are about to put our house on the market. It’s in good condition throughout, except for some walls which my toddler DD scribbled on a few months ago.

Shall I get them painted or leave it as it is or just try to wipe them off (scared I’ll make it worse) ?

Fresh white paint, definitely. As well as looking so much nicer it'll give buyers the impression that the house is well looked after and ready to move into. If they see scribble on walls they'll probably look for other flaws. Good luck with the sale!

Paint for sure, 3 out of 4 houses on our road went on for sale this year. The one that is all white and looks to be move in on Rightmove sold in 2 weeks, the one with red paint in a lot of rooms is dull and been on since the start of the year, the grey one sold in 2 months.

Fresh paint, neutral colour.

If it’s wax crayon it may show through. Cost my cousin a fortune to get her daughters artwork off the walls as the decorators had to paint it with some grease stopping stuff or something. Unless she was done!

Thanks Shirley and Ruskbaby.

Our walls are white anyway. I will get one nice coat on them. Thanks :)

Omg Frasier! Ours isn’t a lot luckily. A bit of crayon and a lot of pencil. I think we have some felttip art too Blush

Try toothpaste on an old toothbrush on the wax crayon and an eraser on the pencil. You will probably need to use stain stop paint to stop the felt tip showing through. The tins are much better value and less messy than the sprays. Use a small gloss roller for the easiest application - it's really thick and difficult to apply with a brush.

We just bought a flat. A fresh coat of paint makes a massive difference. But Please stay away from magnolia IN EVERY SINGLE ROOM. Simple white walls means the new owners can paint over it in any colour they like. It's like a blank canvas. Wink

I'm told meths is better than white spirit for cleaning off grease. Never needed it myself, sugar soap is enough for kitchens, and brush-on white stain-block for other marks that might show through.

I'd say definitely paint.

I had a valuation a few weeks ago, at £70,000. (large 3 double bedroom, dining room, single and double garage, beautiful views and superb balcony on 2nd floor bedroom).

I painted all the walls, skirting, coving, all doors inside and out plus other work I could do myself - including plastering small areas etc - took me 5 weeks of hard slog (and tears).

Revalued at £95k. All the estate agents I got round admitted they hadn't really thought it would make such a huge difference. I have spent less than £200 total including paintbrushes and other tools and stuff I needed.

My home now looks so amazing I don't want to move, but I have to.

Anyone wanna buy in Sheffield? Halo

Definitely paint. We painted the whole of our house before putting it on the market. Mostly blank canvas white/off white and absolutely no magnolia or feature walls. Yes, it was lots of hard work but the cost was relatively little and we just had an offer of 5k over the asking price. Also adding that when the estate agent came back to re value, he increased the asking price by 15k. So all in all another 20k for us - not bad for 3 weeks work.

Yes to restoring white walls.

Try getting the worst off with baby wipes before you paint , they might not remove it all but will be less coverage needed if the worse bits are reduced
