New kitchen - solid wood not been success
Can't stand the scruffiness after 12 years in situ
Regular oiling but black bits near sink and stainage
So do I go granite or what do you suggest.

I have granite in kitchen and solid wood in utility (stupid choice but here when we moved in). I love my granite, still looks brand new, 6+ years later. Easy to clean but does smear. Perfect for making bread/pastry. I can't think of any cons, maybe cost?

If you're worried about smearing you can get leather finish granite. It has a matt finish so doesn't show smears.

I have 20+ yr old kitchen with granite top & it has really stood the test of time...it's completely perfect. Great that you can put hot pans directly on surface without worrying. Mine is dark grey with silver glints, always comes up very shiny. You can scrub away any dried on stains - with Brillo pad if needs be!

BTW the cabinets are solid wood so we've had then professionally repainted a couple of times, which wouldn't be possible if they were a man made material. Getting best quality kitchen you can possibly afford really pays off IMHO. We didn't install it, previous owners did. I probably wouldn't have had the budget for it, but it's been a huge bonus.

I honestly can't think of any cons to granite if you can afford it. It's my dream finish.

All you need to do to stop streaks is follow a damp cloth with a dry one when you clean it (or use a streak free cleaner)

There are NO cons. HTHGrin

Currently trying to decide what to have in my new kitchen. We really need a light coloured worktop as the room is NE facing, so was steering towards quartz as I believe it is more stain resistant (we are not careful owners!). Anyone has a light granite, and if so how was it? (Ideally would prefer granite to quartz if possible!).

Had granite in kitchen in the US and oil and red wine made marks. Could get them out but was a faff.

I've got quartz in my kitchen. It's brilliant. Almost impossible to damage and just a wipe with an e cloth and it looks great. I have mirror flecks in it so the dirt isn't too obvious if I haven't cleaned it.
