Replacing carpet, what with? Dogs...

Hi

I have dogs and sadly carpet is just not compatible with them. We have two of the bedrooms upstairs and the stairs/landing carpeted which are OK, but downstairs the front room has carpet and I want it gone.

Underneath the carpet the floor is boarded over with underlay etc on top, so I am presuming it can all just be ripped out and something else put on top.

Question is, what to get? Victorian cottage, porch has a vinyl tile pattern, dining room is natural floorboards, kitchen and downstairs bathroom are a wood effect vinyl. The vinyl in the kitchen is actually pretty good in terms of looking similar to the dining room; do I go vinyl in the front room with a nice rug or is that weird? It looks hard to find some sort of engineered wood that is very similar to the dining room, and it does look quite pricey.

What do fellow dog owners have downstairs?

sounds silly but what type of dogs are they (i.e. what are their coats like?) think it would depend on length of coat / moulting.

We're in the process of trying to decide what's best for our dog in terms of flooring. We're getting an extension done and will be replacing the flooring throughout the house when it's all finished as it isn't to our choice - it's the previous owners choice.
Our dog is arthritic and has neuropathy in one of his back legs so we need something that non slip as well as the usual doggy ones like easy to clean, doesn't show the dog hair and muddy paw prints too much etc

Our thoughts so far are amtico karndean,, Camero or polyflor. Also some of the new laminates that our builder has suggested as they're apparently non slip

I agree @Twogirlsonelabrador I mean would they lay still or nip your ankles GrinGrin

We have two dogs. In our time we've had real wood, engineered wood, porcelain tiles, Amtico and laminate. The best one in terms of both durability, ease of cleaning and comfort for the dogs is definitely the Amtico,

I don't have dogs but I do have cats. After lots of research in floor shops & asking on MN we went karndean. Everyone advised us this was best option with animals & babies. Easy to clean, looks good & waterproof. Having seen how expensive engineered wood has aged in friends house i'd steer clear. Karndeans cheaper products looked better than amtico but amtico expensive ranges looked better than karndean I thought.

We've got Quick Step, I think it's their Ultra range which they advise can be used in bathrooms. It is so tough. Looks very authentic, lots of grain and texture in the wood. Dog pee and poo and puke wipes off easily.

I am with tattychicken.

Have two labs, therefore hair fucking tons of the stuff, 'oops, i just rolled in something', and 'goodness me, that pond/stream/north sea just appeared!' to cope with.
We replaced ALL of our carpeted downstairs with quickstep. The hoise now smells, looks and actually IS a lot cleaner.
Quick vac and mop, and job done.

Best thing we ever did.

Thanks for all your thoughts everyone, this is really helpful.

I have three dogs Blush one is a hypoallergenic non moulty breed, the other two are golden retrievers. One has a rather sleek coat but my eldest is über fluffy. He's nearly 10 and so I definitely wouldn't be looking st laminate and was a bit worried engineered wood could be super slippy too.

Think I will order some samples Smile

@orcinus we found the samples too small to make a decision. Most flooring shops will let you take home their full sized boards though if you ask nicely Smile really gives a better idea of colour/grain.

I have Karndean in Classic Oak downstairs and a large black lab. The floor doesn’t show the dirt at all, to the extent that I don’t mop it as often as I probably should. Needs vacuuming though, to remove the the fur tumbleweed in the corners.
