Old horrible window but can't afford to replace. Handle has snapped off. Need to be able to open and close it as it's so warm in the room. I see you can buy new handles but how do I go about getting rid of the old fitting?

Not too practiced at DIY but have access to most tools and am willing to try anything!

I know it'd be wise to pay someone to help but that's not an option. Any suggestions gratefully received.

I'd probably buy a new handle and see if that works, apart from that it's better closed than open from a security point of view.

I think you tube is your friend here - try

Looks to me like the spindle is still there inyour photo? Can you not grasp it tightly with pliers to rotate it?

TerrieTibbs · 06/07/2018 07:22

Thanks all.
Yes think spindle is still in it. Do you think I'll have to drill it out?
Will watch the YouTube video now, probably explains it!
Yes better shut than open but its killing me not having a breeze in the evening in this weather!

Pliers found. Spindle was loose and wouldn't turn so has come out. Better carry on watching the YouTube video

there is a fair chance you will find a matching handle on www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/search?SearchText=window+handle

It would be a bit of a coincidence if the handle broke at the same time as the mechanism.

As it appears to be a plastic window, ask around for personal recommendations of a local repairman, if you can't fix it yourself. Plastic windows and patio doors are not very reliable, so there is bound to be at least one local trader who specialises in these repairs. I doubt it will take as long as an hour. Don't be talked into buying a new window.

Note that an paid-for listing on a website is not a personal recommendation. CHECK it, it's an advert. Good local TRADEesmen don't have much need to advertise.

Thanks so much for your advice, really appreciated.

In the meantime, during my repair work today, I found that an Allan key put into where the spindle came out makes the perfect handle. Window has been open all day, slightly difficult to shut but have managed to do so just now. So am happy with my temporary repair whilst I check out your suggestions Piglet John.
