Help me choose my floor tiles, please!

Am going round in circles so would really appreciate any thoughts on this Smile

Currently planning the new extension - kitchen/diner approx 20sqm. Pretty much decided on DIY Kitchens Luca Gloss in dove grey, and speckly white quartz worktops. But can't decide what floor tiles to go for. It's complicated by the existing floor in the rest of downstairs being (very) dark brown solid wood oak. We love it, but it's not suitable for kitchens, so can't extend it (and can't afford that either!). So the new tiles need to work with that - there will be an opening into the new extension about 2.5m wide where the two floors meet.

So I think I want ceramic or porcelain tiles. I like the wood effect ones, but don't think it would look right next to real wood. Looking at various grey tiles, but then will the kitchen look too grey? I quite like slate but don't want the upkeep and want something easy to clean. Don't like the slate-effect ones as they look too fake, but maybe I've not found the right ones? I've ordered loads of samples but can't find anything I actually like when I see it up close. Help! Can anyone with an eye for design think what would work best?!

I agree real wood will always make fake or tiled versions look cheap and awful ( not always, but you'd have to usually spend more than the real wood would have cost to get a good look)
What about a slate effect tile or limestone effect?
We've got these in our downstairs wc and they are amazing. You'd notice they weren't real next to slate but next to our floorboards they look superb. Will try and find where we got them from as they had our colourway and a greyer one.

They are from tile magic..30x60 slate effect tiles, there are a few colour variations

We got laminate in the kitchen, the new type of laminate that is waterproof. We didn't want wood effect tiles as the floor was coming from the hallway so didn't work unless I also tiles the hallway which wasn't going to happen. but that was our first choice and what we got in the bathroom was Bathstore wood effect tiles.

Have you looked at limestone tiles?
Random Google search -www.stonesuperstore.co.uk/somerset-limestone-tiles-tumbled-brushed-2

Alternatively I think a green toned slate would look beautiful against the dark wood

Thank you, some good suggestions there, I feel another round of tile sample buying coming on!

@Bellends - your tiles look lovely and great to see them next to the wood. Are they easy to keep looking good?

I would go for very large format “cement” tiles from Porcelanosa. Keeps the grout down for kitchens and goes with grey very well. It’s a modern look for a modern kitchen. No problem with it against dark wood and the larger tiles don’t mirror the wood in any way.

We just got porcelain tiles from mandarin stone......cavendish buff which are made to look like limestone. We love them. The cavendish grey is nice too. And the price is great.....also like slate or limestone for real stone but we were worried we would ruin that....

Hi ss2011, we have also just received a sample of cavendish buff tile from Mandarin stone, it's lovely and just the light to medium colour we were after. It has a slight undulating surface, yet it is smooth. Have you got them put in your kitchen as yet? And are they easy to clean, hope no dirt doesn't stick to it, in the ridges? Would really appreciate your input. Thanks
