Moving to North London`

Good morning all,
we are relocating to the UK in August and are wondering where to live.
We have 3 years old son and 4 month old girl. We would like to live in North London as my in laws live in Mill Hill Broadway.
The idea is to be able to buy a 3 or 4 bed for a budget around 700 000 GBP.
We would like something with a village atmosphere, with shops and good schools (yes, we are asking a lot! ;-)).
I will work in Chancery Lane.
We were thinking of:

  • St Albans : Is the ocmmute ok with the trains?
  • Palmers GReen? Southgate?
  • other places not too far from Mill Hill?

We would love your advice and your suggestions on where to live (and to be able to afford a house within our budget)
Thanks a lot!
Tanguy

I don't know that area well but you should be able to find a nice house within that budget in Southgate.

East Barnet, Friern Barnet, any of the other Barnets depending on what kind of property you want.
Mill Hill East is cheaper than the area near The Broadway, also some parts of Edgware and nearby.

Finchley? There are several Finchleys perhaps one of them would be OK. Hendon, Colindale (lots of development going on there). Cricklewood.

Southgate is v nice, Palmers Green used to be great but has seen some trouble in the last few years. A stabbing in Brookfield Park last month. Sad I’d go for Southgate also because of the tube which Palmers Green doesn’t have. Oakwood borders are nice as you get the choice of either tube station as well as Trent Park in your doorstep. Grange Park, you will get more for your money as it’s slightly further away away.

St Albans is good for commuting, but I can’t comment on what it’s like to live there.

N21 is the postcode you’d be looking for.

Radlett also has a direct line to mill hill Broadway. Nice place to live (and work!)

My in laws are in Mill Hill and we are in Borehamwood/Elstree. It's literally just down the road (1 junction of A1)and the train line is regular into town.

You could get a decent 3/4 bed house for your budget in the nice part Borehamwood - possibly Elstree.

Yes to Southgate or Palmers Green. Both very nice and I recommend. Have lived in Brookmans Park and Potters Bar. They are good too just a little further out. You will get more for your money and there are nice areas further out. If you live in palmers green the train goes into moorgate and you can a quick train ride to Farringdon and walk to chancery lane. So that works. Brookmans Park and Potters Bar too, takes you to kings X and it’s another quick train ride (circle line) to get across to farringdon too - this is walking distance to Chancery. Or there is the Piccadilly line so they all work well. You will have a commute tho.
I’d look around Cricklewood or West Hampstead or around there. The train route goes through Farringdon which you can get to Chancery lane. The only thing is house prices - you might get a 2 bedder. Hope you find something.
