What colour for this room?

I have no idea what colour to do this room in. Ceiling and above the picture rail will be something like F&B Wimborne White. Haven't decided about carpet and curtains yet (there's a lovely original wood floor underneath that 40-year-old carpet, but it has gaps in it and the wind whistles through). The sofa is my current front-runner for furniture, but I'm not wedded to it.

It's a big room, about 6m x 4m, window at each end (facing north-west/south-east) and was built in the 1930s as an extension to an 1850s house, so I'm going for a period Scottish small country house look. Whatever I do needs to tone in with the epic brick-built monument that is the fireplace (the electric fire is coming out and will be replaced by a woodburner).

Suggestions??

If you're going with a Scottish country house look then it's all about the colours of your rugs, cushions, accessories etc, so the room itself should be neutral. Depends how cosy you want to go - you could go darkly romantic with a mid grey, which would work beautifully in autumn / winter with the wood burner going and all those rich autumnal tones but might be a bit oppressive in the summer. I'd go with a pale heritage green myself.

I like the heritage green suggestion. Or how about F & B Green Blue?

If you can afford it, I’d change the windows to something more in keeping.

Fabulous fireplace. I'd paint the woodwork as the deep orange pine isn't great. I think you've got to choose your furniture and carpet or rug(s) before you decide on the wall colour.

Would a heritage green not clash too much with the red brick?

The window fitters are in at the moment, because you can have a conversation with someone outside through the existing double glazing without having to raise your voice. Sadly when I showed them the picture I have of the house in 1937 and asked if they could replicate it in hardwood Rationel, the quote was in the region of £45,000. As the house also needs a full rewire, insulating, two new bathrooms (one of which is currently a bedroom, so full plumbing fit out), a new kitchen and utility and full decoration (it's only been lived in for 2 years since 1975), sadly I've had to go for bog standard replacements for now, but will definitely be saving up to get it done properly in 10-15 years' time.

Not keen on the sofa.

I'd go down the pale walls and wooden parquet floors route as it's 30's light and bright

KevinTheYuccaPlant · 04/07/2018 08:00

I'd love parquet, but don't think the budget will stretch right now :(

Quite liking Dulux Green Oxide or Country Sky. There's only sky and sea out of the front window and a very large hill at the back, so blue/green tones would work if I can find one which won't look out of place with the fireplace. Thanks for the suggestions, I wouldn't have thought of that.

Is there not parquet under the swirly carpet?

KevinTheYuccaPlant · 04/07/2018 17:39

Sadly not, really nice floorboards, but they're straight onto the joists which makes it very draughty when we lift the carpet. Some were sawn apart when the council put central heating in for the previous owner and weren't put back quite correctly, leaving gaps. I haven't rolled back the whole thing yet, so not sure how much repair work it would need to make it more airtight.
