Why does my dishwasher smell?

More accurately the things it has washed smell. The dishwasher itself smells fine but everything comes out smelling like wet dog. It's a Bosch dishwasher, approx 2 years old and it came with the house.

Things I've tried -
Filters and arms are cleaned weekly
Used dishwasher cleaner on an empty wash twice
Lemon in the cutlery caddy
Regularly run at 70 degrees
Different brands of tablets
Rinse aid and salt are filled up

Any ideas?

Is it beside your kitchen sink? If so, pop an enzyme stick down the sink, and the dishwasher outflow, there may be a blockage between them.

hmm do you leave it open a little when not in use?
is it installed correctly (is the a u-bend in the wastewater pipe?)

GruffaloStick · 01/07/2018 11:54

Yes, it's next to the kitchen sink. I'll have to Google an enzyme stick?!
I've left open between uses and tried without, doesn't seem to make a difference. I'll try and get a picture of the pipes (clueless)
Thanks for the quick replies

Hopefully you can see pictures of waste pipes, is this how they should look?

I've also noticed when I take the filter out there's a pool of water sitting in in there, I've tried sponging this out but that didn't help either.

Thanks again, this is my first dishwasher and I'm a bit clueless

Is the grey pipe the drainage pipe? If yes then that’s the culprit the water can’t drain properly due to it going up and over in the cupboard.

If you open up the pipe I reckon it’ll smell like something’s died in there (typing from nasty past experience)

GruffaloStick · 01/07/2018 12:23

Oh no. Yes I think the grey is the drain pipe. It must be as there's no others I can see.
Crap Envy do you know how it should look?

Hi OP!
Have a look on youtube about how to fit the right waste pipes.
You would definitely need to remove the shelf in the cupboard to accommodate the correct u bends and pipes.

It doesn't cost a lot of money either! Smile

GruffaloStick · 01/07/2018 12:48

Thank you! I can't find installation instructions on the Bosch website.
I think fitting a drain trap might be a bit beyond my skill level, may need to consult a plumber Sad

There is usually water in the filters of a dishwasher - pretty sure it's the water that condenses in the drying cycle. When you first turn it on, the first thing it does is pump out the old water.

GruffaloStick · 01/07/2018 18:07

That's useful to know Wowfudge I'll stop trying to syphon out now 😁
DH has cleared out the pipes and managed to secure the waste water pipe up near the sink as a temporary remedy until we can arrange a new trap. Thanks for the advice, I should have guessed plumbing, everything else in this house had been a bodge job before we bought it
