2 new table lamps and they are buzzing! Is it the bulbs? (See pic)

Bought two new lamps for bedroom. Pic is the description from the box.

Got pack of 2 bulbs (2nd pic), put bulbs in but when switched on the lamps buzz! Have I bought the wrong bulbs? If not what’s wrong? Both lamps are doing it!

did you buy the lamps from wilko, I got two and they buzzed then did their final flicker a few days later, I was concerned it was a loose connection.

the table lamps appear to have dimmers.

Unless by luck or by careful choice the bulbs you have fitted are compatible with the dimmers, it'll be that.

Even if the bulbs are compatible with the dimmers, it'll be that.

HeGotManFlu · 30/06/2018 21:09

what will be that?, I don't understand why would dimmer bulbs buzz

PigletJohn · 30/06/2018 21:10

"Suitable for use with energy compatible lamps" is a meaningless jumble of words unless there is a separate document saying what it means.

It's possible that your lamps would work better with 40W incandescent (filament) bulbs, but I wouldn't count on it. They are in any case unavailable.

If there an instruction leaflet, roughly translated from the Chinese?

PigletJohn · 30/06/2018 21:12

It's usually the dimmers that buzz, rather than the bulbs. But LED lamps (bulbs) have a tiny electronic circuit in the base, it might be that.

I bet if you put the bulbs in a lamp without a dimmer, they won't buzz.

Yes we had "dimmable" bulbs in some lamps that have 3 different dimness settings and they buzzed. Replaced with some different ones and they were ok, but I'm sorry I can't remember what. I stopped understanding bulbs when we went away from 40, 60 and 100W.

The lamps were not from Wilko, just the bulbs. These are the lamps

Happy to ditch (return!) the Wilko bulbs but what bulbs do I need to buy to make my lovely new lamps not buzz? I don’t understand bulbs anymore either! Happy to buy good branded bulbs is someone can link to what I need please.

LED comes in dimmable and non dimmabe versions. Looks like yours are non dimmable. Even the dimmable ones will most likely require you have a trailing edge dimmer in your lamp rather than a leading edge dimmer.
Simplest would be to get a halogen e14 bulb that won’t buzz and works with both types of dimmers.

dudsville · 01/07/2018 11:06

Piglet you have just saved me so much angst. So it's ok that dimmers buzz. I'm going to google and learn more. I was just avoiding using them thinking of getting an electrician in at some point!

HeGotManFlu · 01/07/2018 11:19

Those bulbs in your pic say they are dimmer suitable, what's the difference between led and halogen,

PigletJohn · 01/07/2018 12:24

"it's ok that dimmers buzz"

No, it's a sign of something wrong.

But sadly very common.

There are now at least three different kinds of dimmers, and you are supposed to get compatible bulbs and dimmers. Some bulbs can't be dimmed at all. The sticker on your table lamps doesn't give any clue what kind of bulb suits it, but the instructions say "40W E14 candle (Required)". This type of bulb is now unobtainable for ordinary domestic use.

The dimmer might work for a while with Halogen lamps (they are being discontinued in August) but Halogens rely on their high temperatures to keep the inside glass clean. If dimmed, they are likely to form black or silver deposits on the special glass.

Thanks for all the help. I emailed the manufacturers and this is their reply (in case it helps or is of interest to anyone else)
