Landscaping/fixing garden slope

Anyone able to give me some pointers. As part of our renovations we have raised the patio approximately 15cm above where it used to be, the end result being we now have a bit of a lip/step down to to lawn.

The lawn is a mess which I need to begin repairing, but whats the best way to remove the step down, ie to bridge the existing lawn to the raised patio? Should I simply buy loads of topsoil and wheelbarrow it in and dump in on top of the existing ground, rake it put so the levels are right then re-seed? Or is there any particular preparation I should do beforehand? Should I remove the grass already there or just dump on top?

Thanks in advance.

Looks like your land slopes away from the house. Mine does too. You probably need to terrace, i.e step down from patio to grass. A small amount is fine. A larger drop would need a safety rail, or build up a small garden wall, possibly including a raised bed.

I'm in the process of creating two levels from a slope. But when i extend and put a patio in I'll have to decide on step down from house and then step down from patio.

Forgot to add. I've been getting soil from free cycle, dumping on top and seeding. Too hot now though!
