Which filter for ice maker of huge integrated fridge

We are seeking an in-line filter to fit behind for the ice maker of our massive new integrated fridge. I don’t see how it is going to be possible to replace it every 3 months, and it certainly won’t be used a lot, but told that Brita must be changed for health reasons. Are ther any other options that last longer?

Also are they easy for a novice DIYer to install? We can’t get a plumber here before the fridge will be installed.

Sorry for spelling errors. It will only be used for ice, not water.

an inline filter plugs into the small-bore hose that feeds water from the pipes into the appliance. The filter need not be behind the fridge. It may be more convenient to mount it in the cupboard under the sink, where the hose probably connects to the water pipe via a stopcock.

Some of them connect via a snap-on hose connector.

I can't remember where I used to get them from. Probably an online plumbing supply or a builders' merchant. You may have to buy a box of a dozen or so.

PigletJohn thank you again so much. The water supply the plumber planned for the fridge is on the way to the sink, and quite far away and we have nowhere else we could access the pipes other than under the sink, so we will need something behind the fridge. It arrived today and it is enormous and so heavy that I can’t see us being able to move it out (or wanting to) very often. I am in half a mind just not to use it at all, but seems silly and that we should attempt to find a solution.

Do any inline filters last longer than 3 months?

Are you sure the fridge doesn’t have it’s own charcoal filter? Mine does and is to be replaced every 6 months.

The fridge goes in the recess to the right and the sink cabinet is on the far left. This is what the plumber left, and he can’t return before installation.

What kind of fridge?

wowfudge · 29/06/2018 23:23

What's going on the units either side? You could have the filter anchored in one of them so it's easier to access. I thought it was a pain changing the filter under the doors of our old fridge freezer but with the new one, it's fixed to the wall behind the thing. Luckily our FF is in a large alcove so not surrounded by other cabinets.

Going in, not on

@grasslands we have an ex-demo of Gagguenau vario 400 - the new model has a filter but ours doesn’t.

@wowfudge to the left is a larder with drawers in the bottom half (that we desperately need as kitchen not huge and to the right is oven and combi oven with storage which we also desperately need. I also really don’t want to open up the back of the bottom cupboard to the dust and drafts etc behind. I wonder what other people on this situation do?

You wouldn't need to open it up necessarily - two holes big enough for the small bore pipe to fit through either end of the filter. The pipe is about the diameter of a pencil. A couple of supporting brackets to hold the filter in place will be needed too. It might fit behind the drawers, especially if it is put right at the bottom of the unit. Alternatively, it could possibly go in the service void at the rear of the larder cupboard though in order to access it, an access hatch would need to be made in the unit back board and you'd need to take a drawer out, etc to get at it. Your kitchen fitter is probably going to be most helpful in finding a solution.

wowfudge · 29/06/2018 23:40

It could possibly go under the unit behind the plinth.

Jetteage · 29/06/2018 23:46

Thank you. The kitchen fitter is here tomorrow but there have been so many other complications that we have wanted to focus on bigger priorities. I will see what he suggests.

I would prefer a filter that doesn’t need to be changed every 3 months since I don’t expect we will use the ice maker that much (have never had one), but we do need to find a solution for replacing it no matter how many months it lasts

Rightly or wrongly we have a filter behind our huge fridge freezer, we changed the filter once and have never bothered since (7 years ago) to date we are all healthy despite using the ice maker daily. It's tap water that's in it so as far as I'm concerned its safe! We are in a soft water area so no limescale build up.

PigletJohn · 30/06/2018 09:19

you should have a stopcock to turn off the water supply to the fridge if when it starts leaking or the pipe bursts. This stopcock must be readily accessible. So the filter can sensibly be placed close to the accessible stopcock.

humding · 30/06/2018 10:36

We just have the filter resting on top of the fridge and change it every 6 months as the fridge reminds us to do.
