What to replace horrible 60s gas fires with

We have just had an offer accepted on a lovely 1930s house. Its got 4 rather hideous fireplaces (think pink floral tiled surrounds with those horrible 60s(?) gas fires in.
They have to go as not only do they look awful they also look unsafe (and I will soon have 2 toddlers). Anyone know what are my best options to replace them with?
I was thinking of getting an old fire place or just mantle from eBay to replace the tiled bit (I presume I can just remove the tiled bit and then get a builder or someone to neaten up and attach the new surround)? But I've no idea what will be behind when I remove the gas fire bit (looks like a piece of board is covering the actual fire bit.
Excuse my total lack of knowledge about this stuff - any help appreciated!

Unless you want a working fireplaces, a mantle, fire surround and Heath can be relatively cheap to source and should cover up any defect left in the walls when you rip out the old ones, once the gas has been capped off.

Thanks - yeah 3 of them we won't use but it might be nice if the one in the living room could work at some point (when the D.C. are a bit older). But if it's going to be relatively easy to do fix it cosmetically we could revisit it a few years down the line to get that one working. The other 3 it's just cosmetic
