Cooker has broken - how long is reasonable to wait for landlord to get it repaired/ replaced?

Hi, I'm hoping there are some landlords out there or people with experience of property rentals that might be able to give me some advice.

I'm privately renting. The main oven has stopped working (making a loud noise and not heating up). Reported to landlord a week ago. In the meantime I've been managing with the top oven (which is tiny and not very effective) and the job. But don't have a problem with this for a week or so.

I emailed my landlord for an update today and his response was "I will get round to the cooker when I have the funds to do it".

I've gone back to him to ask for an approx timescale but as yet no response. Does anyone know what the expectancy of a landlord is in getting repairs done?

the only holdback is getting repairmen in & believe me that can be a bitch - so 24hours is a bit unrealistic - I would hope to do it within a week but it depends on how busy the repairman is (& where you live ie is it a rural area - because getting the chap out of his area can be more problematic) its very unprofessional to say I haven't got the money (unless you are behind in the rent) mind if you were in social housing they are dire in doing any repairs (delays & awful standards)

please don't stop rent but do look up "shelter" or ring them they should be able to give you advice.

I would say within a week he should have at least got the ball rolling. It's not as much of an emergency as heating etc and a repair or replacement can take time to organise.

However not having funds is no excuse. That's absolutely not your problem! I have a property which is let and would not dream of using this excuse if my tenant needed a repair.

All landlords should be aware that things will need replacing and should budget so!!!!

Are the cooker and oven gas? When was the last gas safety check done? As I’m sure you’re aware any gas appliance that comes with the rental needs to be professionally checked yearly.
