Awning?

So picture it...

South facing garden, light-coloured patio, white rendered (but nothing fancy) house leading in to it. Yes that's right, I live in a crucible. Could I attach an awning to an outside wall like my Sylvanian Families bus used to have? Has anyone done this? I need some shade we're cooking here!

My neighbour has a red and white stripped awning. When visitors come they always point it out with a wtf face. I think they're ugly personally but if you want one go for it! Maybe a plain neutral colour would be nicest.

ElinorCadwaller · 25/06/2018 15:11

Yeah....DM said "oh like a butcher's shop" Hmm I'd definitely avoid stripes!

Can anyone think of a nicer way to get some shade?

You can get a sail thing.

ElinorCadwaller · 25/06/2018 15:22

The shade sails are excellent and much nicer than an awning.
Although I have a bit of a kitch nostalgic feeling about electric awnings as my grandparents had one!

We have a shade sail. It's clipped to the walls on two corners and the third is clipped to the washing line we're classy!. It's brilliant, and a doddle to put up and down.

ColonelCakes · 25/06/2018 21:32

I love a shade sail, we have the ikea one strung up in summer and put it in the washing machine before packing it away for winter.

I’ve got the same garden dilemma and have considered an awning. These are nice but I’m sure are horribly expensive if Hillary’s blinds are anything to go by

We have an awning in the back garden, left there by the previous owners. I think it's most likely from Coopers of Stortford. I have put it out on occasion, but it does make a really annoying flapping noise in the wind!
On the whole I'm grateful to have it when needed, but I doubt I would have brought it myself.

On holiday in Corsica (I think) the owners of the holiday let had retractable shutters almost, on a metal frame which was permanent. Will try find pics

This sort of thing

We have a west facing garden and the house had a huge retractable awning on the west side when we purchased. It covers a 5m glass wall so we need the shade in summer. Awning is electrically powered and has a remote controller to signal the motor to reel it in or out.

It’s totally brilliant - keeps the house much cooler in the summer, provides a nice ‘cafe eating’ feeling when having meals outside under it. And provides handy shelter for outdoor gardening tasks like potting up when it’s raining. Would highly recommend!

CreativeMumma · 27/06/2018 13:45

I have cream awning which i think looks nicer than the stripy one. Its made such a difference in the summer, i would recommend it!

ElinorCadwaller · 28/06/2018 11:11

I do really like the posher, automated awnings but I don't think our fairly modest house could live up to one. A shade sail is looking very appealing though-and I guess I could take it camping, like one of those well-prepared Dutchmen.

The cat left half a mouse outside last night and it's dried to the bone before I've had chance to move it. We're in Yorkshire fgs.

The other thing that people in hotter climates sometimes do is put up a wooden awning (just with slats on top, though, and gaps between) and then grow a deciduous climber up it. So in winter, the climber has died back, in summer, it's all leafy and shady.

ElinorCadwaller · 28/06/2018 11:59

I would love to do something like that in the long term kitchen. It could be so pretty.

We have an awning on our red hot south facing patio. It's lovely and we get lots of compliments. It's a very light plain grey and it's one of the best things we ever bought! It keeps the room cooler and means you can sit out on the patio without frying.

p.s If you PM me, I can send you a link to a picture of mine (on my builders website).

We have one of these www.weinor.com/awnings/ it's fantastic and gives us another room outside.

Has a wind sensor so that if it's left out and it gets windy then it retracts itself.
