Having Contractors in Before Exchange

Hi all - just wondered what others thought of this. Currently in the process of buying a property. Our surveyor's report has recommended electrical and asbestos testing. We would also like to get DP's dad to have a look at the property before we exchange, and I'd quite like to measure the windows etc. so we can make decisions about curtains and furniture. Is this an unreasonable amount of times to put the vendor out? I can't imagine managing to coordinate so that we can do them all on the same day, so I guess it will be people (us, and then two contractors) going in on separate occasions. They've already had to accommodate the surveyor. I saw a post about someone worrying about buyers asking for a second viewing.

Also, should I just tell the electrician and asbestos contractors to make time/date arrangements through the estate agent? I am struggling to work out the logistics!

I think you can ask for the asbestos and electrical survey but the rest needs to wait. You shouldn't pick furniture and curtains until you've lived in the place a while - once you use a house you get to know what would work best. I pictured doing different things before we moved in.

I think it’s totally reasonable to ask for contractors to go in.
We’ve had to on our house and asked for three on our onward purchase.
We also went back to measure and go through the house with the survey in hand. Basically to work out what we can live with and how to spend the money we have.

Contractors should contact the estate agent directly.

I think if you want to go in with DP's dad you could at least try and coordinate that with one of the contractors. To some extent I'd be reassured you were serious about the house but on the flip side I'd be a bit worried about what your intentions were with the results of these visits - would you renegotiate depending on the outcome?

I would want to arrange times directly with your contractors myself, in my case because of shift work and house cats (I wouldn't let the agents do the visits).

Thanks - I think we will try to go at the same time as the electrician, it's just a bit of a nightmare to coordinate with so many parties! seven201 - I just want to check whether our furniture and curtains can fit so that we can give it away in advance if necessary, rather than going through the hassle of moving a bed which then won't fit in the room it needs to.

I would have thought things like beds you could work out from the room dimensions and floorpan rather than have to physically jeasure for that - unless you havent got a floorplan?
