Solid wood kitchen units

Hi everyone Smile

I am about a month away from starting a kitchen extension and I would like to fit it out with a shaker style painted kitchen with solid wood units and doors. I love Plain English etc. but don't have the budget.

Can anyone recommend anywhere that I might buy solid wood kitchen cabinets (not just doors)?

So far I've heard of:
Higham Joinery (too expensive)
Neptune
Handmade Kitchens Direct
Pineland (don't want pine)

Has anyone got any experience of any of these or any others (good or bad)?

Thank you

ply is the best for a unit as less movement than other woods.
om top of that there is no actual benifit from wood and mfc egger board as an example.
of course wood will hit the pocket more

Hkd are not solid wood but wood veneered. It’d be very expensive otherwise.

Most painted kitchens seem to go for a wooden frame but mdf doors as all wood does move and split so the finish doesnt last so well. I used unfitted kitchens 8 years ago but they dont fit them, you need a local builder to do that. Quality of the build is good. Plain english do a cheaper version - dont know if you have looked at that? Other way is to find a good local carpenter who will copy a design and may do it cheaper than the big companies.

Burbidge kitchens are solid wood cabinets and doors.

I am feeling embarrassed by my lack of kitchen cabinet knowledge! Thanks for the advice.

I will look at Burbidge and Unfitted kitchens. I think even the cheaper Plain English offering will be too expensive for me. I did wonder about a local carpenter but thought somewhere like Handmade Kitchens Direct would be the same quality but cheaper.

If Handmade Kitchens Direct are wood veneer, are they no different than DIY Kitchens? I've combed the DIY Kitchens website and can't work out what they're made out of.

Burbidge are a door supplier and do not supply the actual unit
if you buy their doors it will be supplied whit whoever the supplier uses.
Burbidge are the more expensive of door suppliers also

Devol kitchens are really lovely quality and very professional to work with.

Thanks Gertrude, Devol are lovely but a very long way over budget for me.

And thanks Diseno, it seems there are quite a few manufacturers of wooden doors but those who make wooden units are of the megabucks-glossy-showroom variety!

Neptune / a local cabinet maker seem to be my best bet.

Pineland I think make solid wood units

Most use mdf or some variation on it

Top end places tend to use plywood as described above

I wouldn't assume solid wood is better for cabinets tbh

Have you tried a company called Mereway?

Before you buy new just take a look at ebay. I bought a fabulous used kitchen solid wood doors and units and got it for £3400 for a large kitchen. I had a couple of units left over which I put in garage. It had all things I wanted, carousel, wire in cabinets and very well made. I saw receipt from seller and it cost over £17k new. It was 4 years old but unmarked. It was not brand new but I got a much better quality kitchen than I could have afforded new and money saved on kitchen bought me nice extras such as wine fridge, bean to cup coffee machine and expensive tiles. All I'm suggesting is to look put in search complete kitchen used.
