Kitchen plan help please!!

Hi everyone

Could you please critique my kitchen design. Apologies if it's not great but have created it on planner 5d!

I have a Kitchen design meeting tomorrow and really want to go in sort of knowing what I want as I need to order the kitchen ASAP

The first door leads to the kitchen extension off the hallway. To the left of this is a family seating area (not shown on the plan) . There isn't a wall as shown, it's all open plan.

The second door, in the middle of the units, is the door to the utility room.

On the back wall, I have a large range cooker in the middle with two fridge freezers on either side ends.

On the other wall I have the sink with the dishwasher next to it. This is an outside wall.

The kitchen units will be going up to the ceiling.

I will take out units at the end of the island where the bar stools are to create an overhang.

In the empty corner I'm going to have a window seat

I have ummed and ahhed for ages. Something doesn't look right and can't figure out what it is.

Any criticisms or amendments or ideas how it will flow better will be most welcome !

Your island seating needs to be at the other end - where you have it now is in the way if flow round the working parts of the kitchen and it'll be annoying and potentially dangerous.

Were do your gas and electric enter the kitchen and where are the drains? This needs to be taken into consideration.
Also have a think about where things like the Toaster, kettle, microwave and coffee maker will sit, and where you will prepare food ? Do you have a utility? If not washing machine and dryer and also Dishwasher?
Kitchen bin in a cupboard?
Heating? Is there wall space for a radiator or are you going underfloor ?
Lighting? Spots? Under-cupboard?
Do you have enough cupboards for not just your pots n pans mixer etc but also for crockery glasses and of course food.

MissCherryCakeyBun · 25/06/2018 13:37

Sorry just seen you do have utility, so skip that part xx

We had a new kitchen in January, the company came out to the house and discussed the way we use the kitchen, what we want from it and our 'must haves' and 'like to haves'. The kitchen is nothing like I would ever have thought of, and I absolutely love it.

@wowfudge I didn't think of that, I thought that the opposite of end of the island wouldnt be suitable for seating as thats the entrance way into the kitchen so would have more traffic than the other end

Visually it's lovely. Are the tall units in the sink run for food? If so I think having the 2 FFs and food cupboard so spread out, and the pantry and sink quite far from main prep space, might make it feel awkward when you are prepping. The sink is a long way from everything else. It's often put in the centre because it's used at every stage for rinsing, draining and washing up. Your current design would have a lot of to-ing and fro-ing to the sink I think.

I'm sure you'll have tried this and prefer your own, but just in case, I'd try putting a tall FF and pantry next to each other top left, and centre the range on the rest of that run. That gives you a prep area on the left, cook area in the middle and washing up on the right.

A more conventional layout might be to move sink onto the top wall with the range and have the whole right hand wall as tall units - cupboards, FFs (maybe american) etc. But I expect there might be very good reasons to leave the sink in its current corner. You're really lucky to have so much space. I'm sure it'll be fabulous!

I do agree with wowfudge about moving the breakfast bar away from the main cook's thoroughfare.

@hadalifeonce (great name) which kitchen company would you recommend for planning? the extension is being built at the moment and is currently just a shell

Your hob, sink and fridge should ideally be in a “triangle” so the least amount of steps from each other. Currently they seem far away from each other. We have a huge kitchen but still only a few steps between these three key areas.

returnvisit · 25/06/2018 13:55

@IStillDrinkCava I really like the idea of having the sink and cooker on the same wall as you suggested. Do you think it will look crowded?

I have considered the idea of the whole right hand wall being tall units and I love that look but my DH said that the sink should be on an outside wall In case there are any plumbing issues so I'm in a pickle - ahhhh! I will reconsider moving the sink.

all very valid comments from everyone thanks so much

thanks @MissCherryCakeyBun - I need to go look at every cupboard and decide what's going in each .

its a new extension and is being built at the moment so I can decide what services go where

I'd definitely agree about the stalls. This is ours and the kids can sit at the island without being in the way at all! Our entrance is just to the left between dining and threshold into kitchen

We used a local independent company, which was recommended. Whichever company you go with, they should be able to go through a portfolio, and give you names of previous customers to contact.

Hadalifeonce · 25/06/2018 14:04

AND... once they had drawn up the initial plan we went to the showroom where we looked at a 3D design on a big screen and tweeked it as necessary.

wowfudge · 25/06/2018 14:08

I've had another look and would swap the tall units round with the sink on that wall, but watch what you have near the door because you don't want to create a tunnel effect or a hazard making it annoying or potentially dangerous. If you have the space, consider having the breakfast bar area on the long dining table side of the island.

Baxdream · 25/06/2018 14:27

My only other thought is the dining table. That part of ours is really hot at 5/6pm (our garden is west).
It may be just where it's hot I'm thinking it though

buttyblahblah · 25/06/2018 14:31

I'd have cooker and sink on the same run as at the moment you would have to cross a walk way with a boiling pan of pasta to strain it in the sink.
