2nd hand Lacanche or new Rangemaster?

My worry with the 2nd hand thing is that it can go wrong at any stage! The delivery people might baulk at moving it, it might not work and then I'd have to go through the rigmarole of getting it removed and getting my money back, I'm not sure who I have to contact to install it/repair it/service it etc etc.. It might not last that long after I buy it (although they are supposed to last forever), also its slightly bigger than the cooker we have now so would probably have to get a new rangehood..

On the other hand the Rangemaster is pretty boring and I'm not sure if they're really built to last - everything seems to have built in obsolescence these days.. But that's my only objection - boring and could possibly need replacing in five years..

Does anyone have any thoughts? Has anyone bought a second hand cooker from eBay and loved/regretted it?

I had the same question so disappointed you've had no replies. I have seen 2nd hand ones on ebay that have been refurbished and come with a warranty though - maybe that will help with your decision, or maybe make it more difficult!

I have a second hand Lacanche from a family member. So far it's lasted 18 years and I believe was 8-10 years old when we got it. I have only had one small problem in all that time which was fixed by Lacanche. It's been amazing, I cook daily, have a large family and is a stunning centre piece in my kitchen. Mine is all gas though so possibly less to go wrong. It's considered to be a semi professional cooker and I would agree with that.

I have a rangemaster and although it looks good, my dh in particular is unimpressed. The grill in particular seems cheap and tinny and very basic for the high price tag. I dont even know what the other one you mention is!

That said, I believe Esse do an oven that looks like an aga, but heats up quickly and is run on electric. It really looks like an aga, comes in lots of colours and I prefer it to mine damn it. Sad that the price tag is around £7,000.

I would not recommend Lacanche, we had one when we bought this house which was about 8 years old. The thermostats did not work and I could not find anyone to replace them, the lowesr temperature it cooked at was 450F. Complete nightmare. I paid their service provider a deposit to complete the work and in the end threatened them with Small Claims Court, they couldn’t do the work & wouldn’t refund the cost. I sold it on eBay and was thrilled to see it go.

We moved into a house with a 20-year-old Lacanche that had spent ten years being abused by a guy getting a divorce and his equally grubby teenage son.

It needed a lot of cleaning, but - unlike the mouldy fridge-freezer he left us - it (cross fingers) survived the experience. So far, it's the best oven we've ever had.

what did you go for? I have a lacanche and although parts are expensive when required I’ve never had a service issue. They do all the parts comprehensively and can be fixed. My builder accidentally damaged a part of mine and the suppliers have given me a quote on how much to repair it.

on the other hand, dm had a falcon for 10 years and had to purchase a whole new range as they were unable to repair it or get parts for it 🙄. Mine is the same age and not a problem, the company that provide them in the uk are also very helpful on the phone in my experience, Sorry to hear pp had a problem, i wouldn’t say this is the norm. Whilst redoing our kitchen we looked at changing it and every single kitchen company told us we were mad to think of doing that as they beat the socks of other makes,
