How to put a lock on a bedroom door

I know this is silly, but I have done very little DIY. I want to put a lock on my bedroom door. It doesn't need to stop marauding invaders, I just want a little privacy. I don't mind using a drill as that doesn't look too hard but I draw the line at a chisel. My door is wooden.

What is the simplest way to do this?

A hook and eye lock is the easiest to install.

Can you use a door stop under the door instead of fitting a lock? That's what I do to stop my bedroom door banging when I have my window open. I also used one when I've been backpacking and staying in hotels with dodgy locks.

NannyR I bought two different door stops but they just slide on the wooden floor when you push the door open!

I would just install a hook and eye then . A pp has kindly linked to a video. Its really the easiest method. Very simple and not too much damage to the wood.

Do you mean a lock with a key, or something to deter small children?

How old is the door? (if old, it may previously have had a lock)

Photo of current door handle and edge of door showing existing latch will help.

There is a bathroom door lock that is very easy to fit if you can use a drill to bore a straight and level hole. It's suitable for a bedroom door as you can lock it from the inside with a thumbturn, but won't delay a burglar as it allows emergency access. Or you can fit a mortice bolt.

I definitely don't want a lock that needs a key. That seems dangerous potentially.

You can drill a padlock like this on 🔐

[quote PigletJohn]easiest privacy of all is a bolt.

It will give way if somebody kicks or barges the door.

easiest first, poshest last

We have the second one that PigletJohn has suggested. Brilliant, concealed and could stop the invaders too.
