Renting

I’ve accepted an offer on my flat but my purchase has just been gazumped so I will have to rent while I look for another house. I think I’ll need a short term rent but they’re expensive and few and far between. Can one take a long term let and then give notice after a few months?

If you get a fixed term AST usually they're a year you'd have to negotiate a break clause. For example when we last rented it we asked for a 4 month break clause as we wanted to buy. So after 4 months we could give 1 month notice to leave.

No ASTs are usually six months

minimum six months in england due to various legislation side effects. get the how to rent guide from gov.uk

in practice you will need most of it.

How many people are you looking for accommodation for? If it’s just you have you thought of putting your stuff in storage and renting a room? I did and only had to commit to three months and then a month’s notice. I shared with an owner occupier in her 50s and it was a really place to live - lodging doesn’t have to be a grotty room with six people sharing the bathroom.

really nice place to live

Thanks for the advice. It is just me but I definitely want a place for myself. There are load of places available so I’m hoping one will agree to a break clause after 6 months.

most sensible landlords will want that any way so should not be a problem. again, please get informed about tenant rights and landlord obligations. too many on here dont and are feeding the bad landlords.
