Moving plumbing in bathroom, expensive job?

louiseee123 · 21/06/2018 13:12

We have a tiny bathroom which currently has a shower, toilet and basin, now my children are 6 and 3 and I feel I need a bath!

However I just don't know how it would fit, il attach photos of the layout how it is if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it. Excuse the yellow decor!

Thanks Flowers

The WC position is awkward as that's difficult to move. Does the soil pipe go through the wall or the floor?

Does the soil pipe run inside the house or attached to the outside? Is it iron or plastic?

draw yourself a floor plan and try this.

Reove WC and showe.

Put bath on end wall ehere they were. Head end of bath may need to be where WC now is

Put basin and WC on window wall facing out. You may need to get a modern WC with narrow cistern.

Run WC soil pipe "horizontally" so it passes through the gap under the slope at the head end of the bath. But if soil pipe is outside no need to do that

Baths are usually about 700mm wide and are obtainable in many lengths.

Ok so I'm unsure what actually is the soil pipe, there is a pipe running from the cistern into the floor, then there is a big plastic white tube running from the toilet itself into the wall. It looks to be going outside I will take a picture to make sure I'm right. Thanks for your help!

which way is up in your second pic?

Are we looking at a wall?

louiseee123 · 21/06/2018 16:55

Yes sorry that's the external wall that the toilet is on

the soil pipe is the 110mm pipe, usually plastic.

Yours is on the outside of the house, so you could put the WC anywhere along that external wall and a plumber or builder can core-drill a neat round hole to poke it through. Extending or altering plastic soil pipe is about as easy as Lego. Anyone who does an untidy job is not competent.

In your existing bathroom. the WC pipes appear to go into a duct or boxing-in. You need to find out what's inside.

I presume your floor is wooden, so it can easily be taken up and H&C pipes laid to the new positions of your fittings. The waste pipe more often above the floor, as they are too big to go through holes or notches in the joists. Examine the old floor for water damage or plumber damage. Bad bits need to be renewed. If it is chipboard throw it all in the skip and have a carpenter lay WBP ply, screwed down for ease of later access, and in panels that can mostly be lifted without removing all the contents of the room. When you leave the bath running and water goes through the floor you will need to lift some boards so it can dry out. Sometimes such a panel can be provided under the bath..

Thank you glad to hear it's possible, what kind of price are we looking at in your opinion?

refitting a bathroom is usually "a few" thousand.

Plumbers should be cheaper than glossy high-street showrooms.

You can buy the bits yourself, let them know before getting a price, and be sure you have it all delivered before work starts.. Bristan taps and wastes are very good; Aqualisa showers are very good, Twyfords WCs are very good. Quality of taps and accessories make all the difference. Nothing is as durable as chrome. Avoid pop-up wastes, they leak. I've recently moved to "clicker" wastes (no plug). Ceramic joystick taps are not as reliable as capstan taps.

White baths and basins are cheap and easy to match (there are a few quality bath brands at higher price)

Tiles are cheaper at Wickes than at Tile shops.

Look out for end-of-line bargains

Chrome accessories, I found Wickes, Toolstation, Screwfix and B&Q all sold the range I liked, though the name on the box was different. Once you have found a range you like, you will often find it discounted on fleabay, also taps and showers.

Plumbworld is a good source. Put "clearance" into the search page and see what they have. Architekt is their own budget brand. Ironmongerydirect have vast ranges and may have accessories.

there is no reason to suppose a good plumber is a good tiler.

get personal recommendations from local people who exist, not from advertising websites masquerading as quality CHECKed.

I wish Piglet John lived near me. I have a million questions and a thousand jobs that need an expert!
