Or is there any chance it's possible to unscrew and find just a worn rubber thingy? You know the ring bit can't remember the name of it. Stopper thing? Washer? Any chance anyone thinks it's possible that just the washer needs replacing?

Dripping when the shower is in use or when its turned off ???

PigletJohn · 18/06/2018 09:32

Do you mean the flexible hose?

Landed · 18/06/2018 11:22

Yes the flexible hose
Yes when it is turned off

It has been doing it for weeks. I tried to tighten where the flexible hose meets the inflexible part coming from the wall but it still drips. This morning i unscrewed the shower head from the flexible hose drained the hose as much as i could re attached the shower head and left it down in the shower tray. Just double checked and it is completely dry and no dripping from the hose attached to the bit coming out from the wall. What does this mean?

Hi, could you buy a new hose and try that? I don't think they cost very much and likely to solve the problem rather than get a plumber out

MummyM33 · 18/06/2018 12:00

Sorry! Didn't see it's doing it when turned off!

PigletJohn · 18/06/2018 12:09

if it leaks when turned off (and not just a cupful or so that might be trapped in the pipe after use) the the shower valve is leaking. Could be wear or limescale. Post a photo or a good description of the valve or mixer.

Anyway, if it is coming from the joints, the rubber washer is probably perished, worn or missing. There is a standard screw fitting and you should be able to tighten the knurled collar with your fingers.

Washer

Collect if there is a branch near you, or order on ebay

You can probably buy them in the high street for ten times the price or less.

Just by a new hose from homebase or something. They are standard sizes and not too expensive. I changed mine a few weeks ago because of same problem.

Thanks everyone.

It's about 9/10 years ago since the new shower was put in. I'll try a new washer first but was wondering why it was dripping from all the way along at the shower head if it is just a new washer that's needed. I've been dreading that it might be a problem somewhere behind the tiling or the on off knob/dial itself.

pigletjohn I'll post a photo when I get home if you or anyone else has time to look.

this suggests it is just the water trapped in the hose that is dripping out. It sounds like new washers will fix it. If you can get to a DIY shop or plumbers merchant, buy some on the way home. A new hose will cost you more

If you can't get to a shop you can mail-order

PigletJohn · 18/06/2018 13:24

...but if you mean it was dripping out of the shower head into the tray, then the valve or mixer is leaking as well.

Here is a photo as promised.

Will buy washers tomorrow and see if it stops but am wondering if as you wonder if it might be valve or mixer. The dripping didn't continue once the flexible hose was drained and I had left the shower head laying in the shower tray. It was originally dripping from both the start of the flexible hose where it is connected to the part sticking out from the tiles and the shower head up in the air facing downwards ready for showering.

There may be a maker's name on thar round knob. Is it an Aqualisa?

Replacement cartridge is quite an easy repair for an experienced plumber

Compare it to the pics of an Aquavalve 600 or 700.
www.aqualisa.co.uk/showers/standard-mixer-showers

Very good quality mixer.
Parts readily available.

PigletJohn · 18/06/2018 21:45

p.s.

If it is, it is designed so that after removing the large circular trim plate, the front can be taken off the mixer to change the cartridge, and it is even possible to undo the pipe connectors and remove the mixer shell from the front. Provided it has been installed per instructions. It is shipped with a spacer sleeve to give clearance. Hopefully that will not be necessary. It is quite an expensive mixer.

Thanks very much pigletjohn for your time, it is an Aqualisa. Sounds like best get a plumber . Now to find a willing plumber Sad for a job that doesn't need a shower room fitted out , they only seem to want big or emergency jobs round here.
