Removing a wall

I know a structural engineer is the reliable way, but just wondered if there is a way to check if a wall can come out because it's not structural?

How old is your house and how is it built? Stone? Brick? Terraced? Detached?

It's mid 1920's but this is an extended bit at the back that spans the kitchen and dining room. I suspect it was added in the 80's

You could check which way your joists run. Joists tend to show where the supporting structure is.

You could also go into the crawl space. If the wall doesn’t actually go down to the ground then good chance it’s not structural.

Additionally what is directly above the wall? If there’s nothing but floor above then it’s unlikely to be structural however if they’ve t-d off a joist it might still be supporting the floor above.

Really you should just get an engineer. It’s really not something you want to get wrong and it’s a few hundred quid for them to make your house insurable.

It's single storey. I wondered if it was helping support the roof and ceiling. The more I write the more clueless I'm revealing myself to be Grin

If you have floorboards you could lift them and look under the wall - if it's sitting on the boards and doesn't go down to the floor i think it's not structural.

A builder should be able to tell you.

Someone told me as a very rough rule of thumb the walls that run perpendicular to the road are load bearing and the walls that run parallel with the road aren't.
