Painting walls of a new build?

I know that the general wisdom is that you don’t paint a new build till the house “settles”.

How long does that generally take? Would it be a bad idea to paint it anyway?

Just viewed a house that was finished a month ago (the builder is an individual developer, so it just the one house and seems finished to a very high standard). I noticed that some of the studs/nails(?) have already popped and cracked the plaster in one of the top floor bedrooms.

Any feedback appreciated. Thanks 😊

if you paint it you waive your right to claim on your defect period for anything linked to that item. (I work for a developer)

oh an the defect period is usually 12 months as houses still dry/swell and settle through the seasons for the first year

Thanks @Peacefulbanana

Does that mean if the nails pop normally, the developer is responsible for fixing the damage (unless I’ve painted)?

How long is standard for “defect period”? Thanks!

if hes just a private builder then check your purchase contract (or ask your solicitor if they included the clause) and what you've signed up for. with bigger developers you usually get 12-24months to report any "snags " to them to fix. like popping nails, dropped doors, dodgy electrics etc
they are also signed up to NHBC / Premier which gives you 10 years cover for major defects - any idea if he is signed up with them?

if none of the above , then you can do what you like as you will be solely responsible for anything that goes wrong.
