' Terrace effect '

Had an architect round to look at a above garage extension.

All the houses in the street are attached by the garages. He said it would be difficult to get planning permission because if every house did the same, the properties would become terraced. So in order to get pp we would have to make it 1m from the boundary which would make a tiny room!

Has anyone had experience of this?

This would be the same for most 3 semi detatched houses. Even without a garage they are often joined by 2 driveways. So 2 single storey or double storey 3xtensions would result in the same affect.
I have often seen extended semis become terraced houses and wonder how the extra rooms V becoming terraced affect the value.
We live in a house extended right upto next doors driveway by the previous owners.
The extension is front to back integral garage at front downstairs shower room with no window as it was probably never permitted as the window would be overlooking next doors driveway. There is also a 3rd reception room at the rear. Upstairs the extension has a bedroom above the garage and larger bathroom to the rear.
If next door extended our house would become terraced and I guess drop in value. Like you say though, if the rooms were any narrower then they would be pretty pointless and small.

Also th8nk about future maintenance. We have recently discovered a roof issue on the extension and we will need to ask our neighbours very nicely if we can put scaffolding up on their driveway to resolve the issue. If they say no then we are in a poor position for repairs.
I regret buying a house built upto the boundary tbh and if we move it will be something I avoid again.
