What should I expect to pay for this?

I've got to put out a job needing a quote for the following:

Replace 4 x existing internal ceiling lights with different ceiling lights
(1 x kitchen ceiling, 1 x hallway ceiling, 2 x living room ceiling)
Replace 1 x existing exterior PIR wall light with a different wall light.

No requirements to move/re-site any of these lights. All replacement light fittings and bulbs provided.

I'm in the West Midlands. It is not an old house - 12 years, modern electrics, modern circuit board. Assume that the new light fittings which are also modern will fit perfectly well into what's here currently.

Any ideas, anyone had something similar done recently?

What I don't want is a 'vagina quote' (!) - 20-30% more just because they're quoting a woman (this stuff happens and it's my hard-earned money, I don't want to be ripped off!).

Just get a few quotes, then you'll know. If it's literally unscrew one and screw in the other, I'd expect half a days work, but complications are rife in electrics due to dodgy existing electrics that aren't up to safety standards. Not to mention ceilings that are crumbly.

DoinItForTheKids · 09/06/2018 13:15

That's just the problem - the 'get some quotes' bit! Obviously, I will do, but I need some idea of what's likely a fair price so I don't get utterly ripped off. On that first scenario how much would that half day be, roughly?

Check out this site, just insert your post code and workmen in your area will show.
I had to fire my builder and was able to find some who knows what they are doing from this site.
I choose them because they were the only one who had the gall to advertise their rate and that for me was a big deal.

Sorry, forgot the site:

www.checkatrade.com

I got massively ripped off after using Checkatrade !

My electrician charged me £20 to change a light fitting and he hung all the fiddly crystals on it.

Oddcat · 09/06/2018 15:36

johnd2 I agree that it depends on whether it's a straightforward job or not. My friend has had a chap round to fit lights and has ended up having to have her kitchen rewired due to a previous bodge job .

MaireadMacSweeney · 09/06/2018 15:43

I've had work done by two different electricians during the past few years and they both charged £150 per day which included some materials like sockets, cables, plugs etc. I provided light fittings and shower.

johnd2 · 09/06/2018 15:57

Half a day would be 100 quid i would have thought, but once you get your quotes you'll know the real answer.

DoinItForTheKids · 09/06/2018 16:14

Thank you all. There's not going to be any wiring issues or whatever - it's not an old house or has any known issues, had it surveyed when I bought it, all is good on that score. All modern, solid ceilings and walls all that stuff.

The only potential is if there's something different in the wiring of the replacement pendant light fittings ie configuration-wise however I did carefully check that the likelihood of this would be fairly low by reading all the reviews of people who had had them fitted - none of the light fittings reported problems so that's hopeful I think.

I too agree that with Checkatrade etc that you actually cannot trust them. The tradespeople are the ones who pay for the ads and so Checkatrade is their customer in effect. If a trade's customer leaves a bad review (even about really serious say builder issues) Checkatrade will remove them, so you're actually not better off - it just seems like it's reliable.

I have got some direct recommendations from Nextdoor (the neighbourhood app), so local people who have been used before, done good work, charged a fair price and so on. Even so, I don't want to have to stand there and get quotes that I don't know whether they are fair or not.

So this is helpful and thanks for responding.

That sounds like max of half a day's work so around £100 would be reasonable provided you are supplying the fittings.

If it's just replacing fittings with no new wiring it's really straightforward (I've even done it myself)

Mishappening · 10/06/2018 21:26

Word-of-mouth recommendation is always helpful. Can you ask around for other's experiences in your area?

DoinItForTheKids · 11/06/2018 11:11

Yes I've got several fully recommended contacts so will give them a go v soon and see what they quote.
