thebag - just take it a day at a time. Every Friday I used to look back and think of all that had happened that week and remember it was moving on.
That does sound like a long long time though eek!
Now we are nearly there and I cant believe what we lived through. You do forget.

DustandRubble · 04/07/2018 12:30

Oh Thebag I really sympathise. We have had similar delays and I think we are twice as long as we should have taken. I have no good advice. I am just working on the assumption it has to be done some time.

How much are people paying for doors? They are so expensive!

Humptynumpty02 · 04/07/2018 18:22

We paid £2k for 13 internal doors, 3 glazed for downstairs and 4 unglazed. They are really heavy and feel good quality.

bobkate · 04/07/2018 21:20

Oh god, aren't they just Shock Humpty can you send a link for the doors you've chosen?
I'm unashamedly willing to beg, borrow, steal any ideas/website links going.
Thanks for the handle tips 4years and red
I am still trying to firm up the bloody kitchen design. Nearly there.
Will stick on some pics over next couple of days to get opinions.

Humptynumpty02 · 04/07/2018 22:02

This is what we went for, shaker doors, purchased from Champion Timber (supplied by XL Joinery). Glazed version for most of the downstairs to let as much light though as possible.

Bobkate.. Were arw you getting kitchen from?

AmazingGrace16 · 04/07/2018 22:11

Lovely doors!
Does anyone know if there are any restrictions on working times for builders at the weekend? Builder is planning on laying our screed on Saturday but next door have been very funny with me about them coming on a Saturday. Just wondered legally if there's any noise implication etc.

Whattodowithaminute · 04/07/2018 22:15

thebag it’s really hard with a project that has been going on so long. We bought in May last year and are yet to have lived in our house. DH and I were talking this evening about all of the lifestyle decisions we’ve put on hold ‘because we will be moving soon’ and here we are without an end in sight.

I’m trying not to overload other parts of my life so have added a small amount of extra child care into our lives for this period, I’m trying not to make rash decisions like resigning from work, I’ve researched as far as possible and have provisional plans for all rooms for lighting and electrics etc. And I’m trying to do some things that are good for the soul, exercise, eating well, spending time with friends so that I don’t go completely dolally.

I’m sure it will get better but it’s incredibly hard. I cried a lot of today and feel better for it.

4yearsnosleep · 04/07/2018 22:43

Lots of good tips here. I'm great at project managing but I'm fairly messy so trying to keep everything clean and tidy will be a battle.

@theredjellybean yes I did 😊 we're now 2-3 weeks from starting I just need to get rid of the bloody conservatory

FiloPasty · 04/07/2018 22:58

Amazing Grace, check your local councils website just google the name and building noise, we live in one council but very close to the next borough and both state no noise after 1pm on a Saturday, all day sundays & bank holidays.

Hopefully · 05/07/2018 05:23

Thebag no useful advice to add as we are a long way off starting the actual build so I don't have any first hand experience, but sending you lots of support and I hope some of the other advice you've received helps.

Brandnewhouse thanks for the book tip, I'll add it to the next Amazon order. There seem to be loads of good project management/gantt chart apps around, which seem sensible too, although I suspect nothing beats an A1 piece of paper which everyone can see!

Humptynumpty nice doors. We will be having glazed downstairs as much as possible too, to get the light through. There has been lots of discussion of glass bricks or those narrow glass strips along the top of internal walls to let the light in (which have a name, which completely escapes me at the moment), but no idea whether it will be within budget/feasible. Our house is terraced with a south facing front and north facing back, so the aim is to get as much light from front to back as possible.

We had a wildlife survey done yesterday (required in our local area for conservation reasons), by someone very local. It took about 8 minutes and cost £230. Even if it takes an hour to write up the report, I'm thinking that's a fairly profitable enterprise!

DH and I are going to start making a shortlist of builders to approach for quotes in a couple of weeks and start asking initial questions (like 'when could you start' and making sure they can manage contractors) - we want to get as much prepared as possible during this 'dead time' while we wait for planning permission. Need to get structural engineer quotes too.

FiloPasty · 05/07/2018 07:31

The Bag, just hoping today is a better day for you, it is hard, I’m only 5 weeks in but we had problems with planning and had to appeal so are 3 years down the line. Not in the same boat but before we had the builders in, I was embarrassed to have anyone round because the house so desperately needed work.
I hope you can find some respite, even if it’s just a cuppa and a biscuit in peace, you’ll get there x

Linguaphile · 05/07/2018 09:33

Oh that sounds hard the bag, hope things perk up soon. :(

Re doors: I’m not terribly impressed with what we have as they were the ‘cheap’ ones... I think they were still maybe 410€ each, which shocked me! Ugh, this is all so expensive right??

Ours is really maintaining steam and moving fast now, thankfully! Cement underfloors are drying like gangbusters in the heat, the stairs tile is going in, and the render out front has been done (it’s just 4 of us in a terrace on a little country lane in the forest). Going in today to choose exterior paint! Am I super boring for going with off-white? 🤔 All of the neighbors have chosen shades of grey, but I feel like a nice warm white might have a little more longevity...

Looking good lingua, really like the steps!

I love white, no idea why people try and choose any colour other than it, so fresh and clean.

Linguaphile · 05/07/2018 12:21

Thanks! Colour choices below (middle swatch in both pics). The small dark grey swatch is the contrast colour we all have and the blue greys on either sides are the colours the neighbours have chosen. Do you reckon the off white is too yellow??

Lingua - ours is rendered in off-white, looks just like your swatch, personally I love it, as it adds a bit of warmth to the look. There's all kinds of shades on our street, the only ones I really don't like are the browny-yellow ones, reminds me of nicotine-stained paintwork!

Linguaphile · 05/07/2018 15:24

Thanks Space, that’s what I was hoping for! It’s so hard to know how it’ll look with just a single swatch. I’m going with the off white I think as if nothing else it at least seems warm and clean and cheery.

DustandRubble · 05/07/2018 16:40

I think the off white looks really nice.

OP posts:
Hopefully · 05/07/2018 17:01

We have cool grey and our neighbours have warm cream and they look fine together - I think it helps differentiate the properties, and the colours are all so pale that clashing isn't really a problem.

Baxdream · 05/07/2018 17:23

We had chalk hill on our render. It is so lovely and definitely not yellow and not grey at all.
I definitely vote for off white/cream

4yearsnosleep · 05/07/2018 17:53

Gah, bloody annoying day here. Builder is due to start in a few weeks & he called today to say he is struggling to get a supplier to supply and fit the steels needed for the project. This will not only cause a delay but he thinks we should make the opening smaller Confused the opening is about 9.8m with a support post but also has an existing steel to attach to the main steel. I don't think we could make a narrower extension work so well and I don't want to extend out further as we'll lose more garden. I've emailed a few steel companies that advertise installation in the hope that someone can do it. Really not what I needed with a pressured day at work and it hasn't even started yet! Wine O'clock thankfully

Whattodowithaminute · 05/07/2018 18:15

Where in the country are you 4years? We are mostly (slight delays but I would blame our builder!) happy with our steel company. That’s a big opening; exciting!

4yearsnosleep · 05/07/2018 18:21

If we can get it, yes! We're Wiltshire/Oxfordshire area
