Our builders have brought a roll of that orange plastic type fencing and are going to peg it accross garden so dogs can still go out but not intervene in build site.
Norbert will be so disappointed

mistlethrush · 09/08/2018 15:14

Our builder has left. My first discussion with him was about the dogs. Luckily one of his staff is frightened of dogs so it's in his interest to ensure that there is suitable access for the dogs to the garden and that they won't be able to escape into the building works! Grin

Hello all! Nothing new to report here, builders still on holiday. 🙄

However, I am in the throes of picking the perfect neutral for our entryway and halls and am having a hard time. Any thoughts on a good grey to use in largely northwest facing light?? Want something warm (so no green, blue or grey undertones) that will also look fresh and contemporary. I’m going crazy comparing colours! Thinking about Ammonite or Strong White. Will I regret this though as they’re a bit boring? Pics of both below and also of the entryway to give an idea of the light situation (flooring will be the same as the stair tiles).

I have polished pebble.. Dulux. On test at moment.
It's got a soft beige undertone.. A sand grey.
I want a very pale cool grey though.. Can't find it.. If anyone has a suggestion...

AmazingGrace16 · 10/08/2018 23:00

@dust I am desperate to pick our protective flooring up too!

Sorry I haven't posted in an age.
Well we are nearly finished with phase 1 a month ahead of schedule. Unfortunately one of the roof lights in the new ceiling has leaked today so we are going to have to bring that up asap as more rain is forecast here and it looks like water is sitting just above the ceiling directly above the brand new kitchen that's being fitted currently. :/ I'm seriously hoping it's an easy fix.

Phase 2 should then start in a few weeks.

Oh and baby is due in 9 weeks!

DustandRubble · 10/08/2018 23:23

Great to be a month ahead! I hope the roof light is an easy fix.

On greys. We have polished pebble in our hallway and I love it, but it is very definitely blue based. It looks pale blue in some lights and if you search MN you will see many blue verdicts. There have been a lot of threads about the perfect grey on here!

We have some chic shadow in the kitchen which is darker and I really like that too. It seems more grey based but I have it next to a dark blue anyway.

It's so individual about paint colours, polished pebble looks like sandy beige in our hall.. Too warm, I am trying to find palest cold grey

Linguaphile · 13/08/2018 08:10

Yeah I know what you mean Jellybean. We have tons of northwest light so it’s cooler in eh morning and warmer in the evening, which makes it so hard to find something that works in all lights!

Would I be insane to go dark in the hallway? We have more natural light in the picture and the artificial light will be really nice and warm, but I’m a little scared to make such a bold choice. Wondering about going full-on and doing railings or down pipe. Here’s my bad paint visualizer mock-up:

Linguaphile · 13/08/2018 08:11

Sorry, meant more natural light than the picture.

Whattodowithaminute · 13/08/2018 09:05

linguaphile I really like the dark.

I’ve done a quick budget review this morning and currently having palpitations... all starting to look a bit tight.

Hopefully floor and roof going up on the extension this week, plastering in bathrooms and master bedroom. Really enjoying seeing progress but still have a long way to go, need to get update on schedule with builder so that I can provisionally book carpeting and garden landscaping in.

MyNameIsJane · 13/08/2018 09:34

I like the dark too. Linguaphile - are you abroad and get more sunny days than the UK? If so, I would definitely take a chance on dark walls.

I’m a little worried that I haven’t had the planning office round yet. The statutory expiry date is 5th September and 2 doors down had their planning refused (theirs was submitted a few days before mine). Typically I’m back to work next week after having the bulk of the school holidays off.

Linguaphile · 13/08/2018 10:10

We actually are quite rainy here Jane (Luxembourg), though I partly wonder if the dark would make it cosy vs white being a bit depressing!

What do we think of going for Hague Blue, Downpipe or Inchyra Blue? Just on the two sides and not the back wall? One wall? Everywhere but the staircase like in the mock-up? I honestly don’t know. 🙈

DustandRubble · 13/08/2018 11:55

Dark walls and a light staircase can look really impressive.

Love the dark linguaphile

mistlethrush · 14/08/2018 08:35

MyNameIs - why was the neighbour's refused, and in what way are your proposals similar?

MyNameIsJane · 14/08/2018 11:19

Theirs is different to ours (our road is set up strangely where our house is set back from the road. So the front of our house is in line with the back of theirs.) They want to extend into the roof and straighten the roof line at the side as well as do a single storey extension. The council do not believe that the single storey extension is that bad. They feel that the roof extension will be at odds with the original roof and have a detrimental effect on the area. I suppose as it can be viewed as you go up the road has a bearing on the decision.

We are building a 2 storey with the second storey in the middle so that the extension doesn’t affect either neighbour.

mistlethrush · 14/08/2018 21:38

So your 2 storey will effectively not be visible from the road - unlike all the alterations to the roof the neighbours proposed? - hopefully this will make yours easier to get through.

AmazingGrace16 · 14/08/2018 21:51

Hi all,
A really quick question from me.
We had our builders fit some internal oak doors today. Front and back are different. They have been fitted similar to the image below not all matching due to how they open. Aibu to ask the builder to rehang them so the same side is showing in the hallway?
Or does it look ok with them hung like the picture?

MyNameIsJane · 14/08/2018 22:02

Thanks @mistlethrush I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I’m wondering if the planning Dept visited the ones which they can refuse easily first.

MyNameIsJane · 14/08/2018 22:03

I think you should ask him to hang them the same way, @AnazingGrace16

AmazingGrace16 · 14/08/2018 22:10

Thanks @mynameisjane
We only got visited by planning about 3 days before the application expired. It was fine.

MyNameIsJane · 14/08/2018 22:13

Wow! They cut it fine, didn’t they?!

AmazingGrace16 · 14/08/2018 22:16

Yes they really did. Ours was quite simple and we could've gone in for permitted development but decided for a few reasons to submit for full planning. I think because it was highly likely to go through they left it quite late just to dot the i's and cross the t's

AmazingGrace16 · 14/08/2018 22:16

Doors look naff hung opposite ways don't They?

mistlethrush · 14/08/2018 22:31

Amazing - no, all of those doors should have the same face into the same room, not different ones!
