thered upthread you mentioned you had chosen the norton....was it the price that made you change to the Clayton? Have you seen the doors in real life? Sorry for the one hundred questions... obvs, any savings we could also make would be fairly helpful at this stage!!

4yearsnosleep · 14/07/2018 09:44

Thanks ladies.

Bobkate we went for Norton and it was £8700 with 10% off plus premium delivery (+ a big custom colour island) The Stanbury was the other one we considered and it was 10% cheaper as they're mdf doors. However I preferred the wood grain on the Norton and like them being solid doors that we can respray if needed in the future.

bobkate · 14/07/2018 11:49

Did you get it in the sale 4years? Reassuring to hear I haven't got it massively wrong. I do think I prefer the Norton as well for the same reasons as you.

theredjellybean · 14/07/2018 17:12

I thought I wanted Norton then my door samples arrived last week and I prefer flat painted look rather than wood grain plus it is cheaper and we are on tight budget. As to door quantity honestly could not tell the difference. Order samples they arw proper miniature doors about a quarter of real size, you get the money back off your order.
We were able to compare loads of colours etc.

theredjellybean · 14/07/2018 17:12

Plus I don't see why I could not respray the mdf Clayton doors...

theredjellybean · 14/07/2018 17:13

Swapping to Clayton brought price down by about 900 pounds which has or will be paying for new sofas in my living room

theredjellybean · 14/07/2018 17:15

Clayton looks just like Norton and samples appear exactly same but Norton is wood grain effect and Clayton smooth paint finish. Horses for courses...

4yearsnosleep · 14/07/2018 17:42

I understand Red. If we hadn't got 10% off we would've also gone for the mdf doors, but we managed to save the difference in the sale. Plus by the time we actually get the bloody kitchen fitted now, we will have bought it 13 months in advance Hmm

bobkate · 14/07/2018 20:08

Oh god, I totally understand red. I think I may order the doors actually. That's such a good shout.

4yearsnosleep · 14/07/2018 20:32

I recommend ordering the doors, not only for style but also colours too. You get the cost refunded and can send them back with the delivery drivers of the kitchen :)

bobkate · 14/07/2018 21:00

Can you get bespoke colour doors sent through as well?

4yearsnosleep · 15/07/2018 08:45

Sadly not Bobkate and when I asked they'll send you a pot of the colour matched paint for £60 Hmm we bought lots of tester pots from F&B and have ended up with Dulux Heritage Midnight Teal as none of the F&B was a perfect fit. You can ask them to match any colour, not just F&B. Custom colours do increase the cost as they're a fair whack more expensive than standard (end panels are 25% more than normal colours). We're having a bespoke colour island and standard (light grey or white, I haven't decided yet) for the rest of the kitchen

bobkate · 15/07/2018 11:34

Fab - thanks 4years.... I remember now you've chosen midnight teal. I remember googling it when you first mentioned it somewhere...it's such a lovely colour.

theredjellybean · 15/07/2018 17:01

can i please please ask for some worktop advice...thought it was all sorted( like kitchen was !!!hahaaaaa...)

i am going mad...we have a pennisula that is 1220 mm wide , it is best not to ask how this has happened and accept it ..it is due to a lip of wall needing to be left to support basically whole house ..oh ok best keep it then.

so we can only really afford laminate worktop , which is fine by me, this is the next 5 yr house not forever home, and i really am not fussed what other people have or think .

but i cannot find worktops wide enough. best i can find i 900mm in a pennisula shape , curved at end as having curved units.

so do i buy two of these and divide equally and have join down middle ? or do i turn them round and have join accross width ways and get end re cut to form a curve ?

do the kitchen fitters do the laminate cutting bit if you just buy the stuff and dont have worktop company do installation ???

Linguaphile · 15/07/2018 18:04

Ooh I don’t really know jellybean. But what about ikea solid surface instead? It’s cheaper than the wood or stone but can be made exactly to measure for your specifications... there has to be something you can use since there are a lot of islands out there that are easily that width!

theredjellybean · 15/07/2018 18:45

thanks Linguaphile...i thought the same , see loads of pics with really wide islands, and not every one can afford quartz or wood etc.

i think the problem is i get over whelmed with trying to choose and then look at endless websites and try to work out how to get curved corners or wider bits etc etc and really i need to settle once and for all on the worktop and then ring a couple of the companies and tell them what i need and let them work out cost or how to do it.

it certainly is not something to try to do at work on sunday evening when i am tired

Linguaphile · 15/07/2018 19:12

Ha ha yeah I’m with you there, nothing good comes of exhausted internet research on a Sunday!

I reckon if you go somewhere reasonably priced, they can give you a better idea of what exactly is feasible and how far your budget will stretch. They might be able to do you a worktop for cheaper than you think! Ikea would totally be my first stop.

Welcome Pallando your house and new extension look fab - love it! If you're only on week 3/4 it really does look like it's whizzing up fast!
red I so know the feeling on Sunday night, knackered research and that feeling of being utterly overwhelmed.
I think, when this whole process is over, I'll feel a bit lost at not having to spend hours trawling the bloody internet for plug sockets, light switches and my current pet peeve...pendant lights for over the island. Oh to be able to afford an interior designer to source everything, and ultimately just tell me what will look good! Never mind. All DH is currently interested in is the great big bloody telly he wants in the new kitchen/lounge place. I will have to reel him in when the time comes!!!
I'm really tired at the mo - I think the heat, and lack of space to escape everyone is wearing a bit thin at the mo. Plus the kids are knackered too.
Anyway - hopefully our roof trusses are arriving on Thursday, ready to go up next week. So no doubt that'll be when it starts raining! Pessimist me, not much Grin
Hope the rest of you are all hanging on in there!

Whattodowithaminute · 16/07/2018 21:47

Welcome pallando

Whattodowithaminute · 16/07/2018 21:48

Apologies posted prior to finishing-great progress for you already! Fingers crossed it continues with the same impetus!

4yearsnosleep · 17/07/2018 10:14

Welcome Pallando! Lovely looking house and the extension looks fab too. Fingers crossed for a smooth build for you

Pallando · 17/07/2018 10:27

Thanks all! Keeping my fingers crossed that it all goes ok - we are having the whole central heating system replaced as well which might be interesting...

HEELPP please! The roof has just gone on my new lean to rear extension and the existing kitchen has gone far darker than I imagined. The builders say it will improve when they knock through, but there are patio doors to the room so I’m worried it will still be too dark. We’re having a new kitchen in there and I don’t want it to be dark,

Has anyone else experienced this? Does it make a big difference to the light when it’s knocked through, plastered and painted??
