Wow Bax.

Can someone advice me on rendering please. Our house is currently pebbledash. We want to change it to smooth rendered. What should we go for, silicon rendering or cement one?

Humptynumpty02 · 09/07/2018 18:24

Silicone is best if you want a lower maintenance render, which doesn't need to be painted on a semi regular basis. We were originally going to go for k rend but our neighbour has had all sorts of problems. Our builder told us to have Ceresit silicone render instead abd so far so good, it's smooth silicone render and comes in a crazy amount of different colors.

mum2015 · 09/07/2018 21:01

humptynumpty
thank you.

bobkate · 09/07/2018 21:57

Thanks bax Love the hot tub addition! Would you mind re posting a pic of your kitchen if you get the chance. Ta!

4yearsnosleep · 09/07/2018 22:55

What width is your kitchen @bobkate ? We're having a very similar layout. I love the all blue on that design 💜

Bax you're living the dream!

bobkate · 09/07/2018 23:12

Thanks 4years
The back run is 3.5m ( made up of tall freezer, 400 larder, oven, oven, 400 larder, tall fridge ) so it'll actually have a frame around it like in the grey and blue scheme.
Then it widens to about 6ish metres. The length of the room will be about 10m.
I just can't get the island units quite right where the seats are. I'll ponder that some more!

theredjellybean · 10/07/2018 06:59

I prefer the all blue too.
I wanted blue but dp didn't like it.. What are you going to have on the floor?

Baxdream · 10/07/2018 08:06

We had cement render and I actually wish we paid the extra to have silicone for ease. It took dh days to paint the house!

Here's our kitchen. It's a lovely bright room so it doesn't make it dark at all.

bax I remember now. It's so lovely! What blue did you choose in the end? And is yours from DIY...Norton maybe?
red we're going for Karndean van Gogh country oak. Think there's a pic I added up the thread somewhere.

Baxdream · 10/07/2018 09:27

No ours is howdens so it's fairford navy

mum2015 · 10/07/2018 09:34

Thanks bax. We should go for silicone rendering then.
Now next issue is how to get existing pebbledash removed? Is it very difficult/expensive?

bobkate · 10/07/2018 09:43

Thanks Bax

Ilovechocolatetoomuch · 10/07/2018 15:46

Love it Bax

@Ilovechocolatetoomuch it's looking fantastic!

I've found a steel supplier, calmed the builder, put the conservatory for sale and sorted some queries with Building Control productive morning just awaiting a start date now

Threesocks · 10/07/2018 15:58

Regarding render - be aware that is you replace more than 50% of the render on your house building tags say you should insulate - we nearly fell foul of this when the building inspector can out last week ...

I did loads of research on trad vs silicone render. We have decided to go for traditional. Mainly because the silicon renders are not fully proven over long periods of time and anecdotal reports were that in some cases people are needing to paint over them as they discolour. Also paints are so good these days that repainting is likely to only need doing every 10-15 years. I think it is one of those things that there is no real right answer. One of the other reasons for going for traditional render is that ours is a period house, so we didn't want too modern a finish.

Threesocks · 10/07/2018 16:00

Sorry it's 25% not 50%

Ilovechocolatetoomuch · 10/07/2018 17:25

4 years no sleep please let me know how much you get for conservatory we are selling ours to a friend and not sure how much to ask for.

4yearsnosleep · 10/07/2018 17:44

I just want to get rid of it ASAP. It's particularly large and requires building Work to install it. It would cost at least £400 to dispose of it so I've put it up for £100 with the buyer in charge of dismantling and collecting

4yearsnosleep · 11/07/2018 05:34

Our conservatory is being demolished on Friday 👏🏽 the woman who bought it is sending a team to take it down.

Thankfully my husband is off work the next few days so he can finally finish emptying it and then the beast will be gone!

theredjellybean · 11/07/2018 06:43

I love chocolate... Your kitchen looks great.
Where is your work top from?
In fact can I ask worktop advice from everyone please...
I am looking online and ordering it separately from kitchen. I might be being stupid but with a peninsula and rounded ends to one long run, do the fitters cut it themselves or do I have to order a bespoke piece or can you get rounded ended bits???
It's so confusing

Humptynumpty02 · 11/07/2018 06:58

Order separately, not only will it typically be cheaper but the worktop specialist will do whatever you want for you, bespoke pieces, different types of finishes (e.g. rounded edges, double bevels, etc). Basically you have your kitchen installed then the worktop company come in and template your worktop (draw out each piece you need) which they then use to cut your worktop and then fit it.

We ordered our kitchen from DIY Kitchens and worktops from Topsco. Kitchen is almost completely installed and worktop has been templated and waiting to be installed. Good service so far from both, but waiting to see the end product.

theredjellybean · 11/07/2018 08:34

Humpty.. Thank you.
I have managed the DIY kitchen bit... Which I felt was quite an achievement!!!
What is your kitchen?
We ordered Norton in lamp room grey but have weeks to change minds.. Last night veering towards carbon Clayton base units and pale grey wall unitd. The floor is a very pale, silvery white wood effect laminate.. I want a pale worktop now too.. Really wanting a very scandic style grey soothing palate

Humptynumpty02 · 11/07/2018 08:57

Sounds great, if you can navigate DIY you can easily do the worktop!

We went for Helmsey but had a bit of customisation done to it. We liked thisbrahge but didn't like the cockbead finish they have so asked them if they could do it without and they said yes so I think it looks really clean now without the detailing. We went for Ammonite units and Hague Blue Island.

Linguaphile · 11/07/2018 11:31

Wow the kitchen is looking good Chocolate!

I like the blue kitchen too Bobkate!

We finally pulled the trigger and ordered the kitchen, so no going back now. I’m pleased, though am now belatedly freaking out about something I’ve just twigged in, which is the fact that our double sinks have a small silver of worktop in between, which means if the tap is kept straight then the water will always go on the worktop instead of into the sink. It will always have to go one way or the other for practicality’s sake, which I reckon will drive my inner neat freak bonkers. :( Oh well. What’s done is done, and I’m otherwise happy. Here’s the final mock-up, with the off white Matt satin finish cabinets and quartz marble worktops. Backsplash will be stacked stone tile like in the picture and I’m still on the hunt for some good wooden-leg barstools that will soften the space and make it feel homely!
