Sparrows nesting in roof

Mammyofonlyone · 06/06/2018 09:17

We have several families of sparrows nesting just under the pan tiles along the front of our house (as surprise surprise the people who did the roof didn't seal the ends off).
So far as I can see they haven't done any damage yet but the constant bird poo all along the front of the house is driving me batty.
Does anyone have any advice on how best to deal with the little blighters?

Annoyingly if they've already nested you may not be allowed to disturb them. We had this although was on the corner rather than over the front door, and we had to wait until the bearing season was over and block the gap with mesh. Otherwise they return next year.

Thanks John, just off to google bearing season for sparrows x

Disturbing nesting birds is a criminal offence, so, nothing, while it's nesting season (broadly, March-August).

In Autumn / Winter you can get the gap filled so they don't come in next year.

We've had a little family of sparrows nesting every year for 14 years now, apart from a bit of plop they aren't any bother and are gone again as summer approaches.
We did try blocking the hole up a couple of times but somehow they always manage to get back in. I'm quite fond of them now 😊

You won't be able to touch them now, but in the autumn you could get the roofers back to fill the gaps so they can't come back next year.

Yes - leave out some bird food.
If you have it blocked it off you could get them to put up a bird box or two nearby.

Good idea about the bird boxes Annabelle

Sparrows have been in our roof for 24 yrs . They have never done any damage.
I think the house sparrow is now red-listed as a species of high conservation concern so need our help to survive .
Therefore think how much YOUR safe shelter will help them. l hope you learn to love your little visitors OP Smile
