Has anyone painted a wall with magnetic chalk board paint? Any insights/pitfalls/tips please?

Dd has her heart set on a blackboard wall that she can write notes on and magnet things to. It has to be a whole wall (and a fairly big one at that!). It’s a new build house with lovely new white walls so I’m not over the moon about it but it’s her room and she’s longed for one for ages! If we are doing it I don’t want it to go wrong so what do I need to know?

I have been researching this. Main thing is the magnetic quality is not great, so she might struggle to attach anything with a magnet. You can get blackboard decals that you stick on the wall in all sorts of sizes.

It's a ginormous pain in the arse! I've done it, the paint is very thick and gloopy and takes a lot of stirring. Once you've started smearing tarry black slime to your wall you're kind of committed to spending the rest of your life continuing the miserable task. It also took a lot of coats, maybe 4 or 5, before I could get magnetic letters to stick. Now it's done it looks OK and does the job but I shan't be rushing to repeat the experience.

I have a picture rail of magnetic. Wouldn't recommend as no idea how to remove. Also every time I used my old Dyson it used to suck all the pictures off the wall. Try to persuade her to have a metal or cork notice board instead. I think you can also get stick on wall tiles which may be better.

Otoh I also have a square of blackboard paint wall next to the kitchen table. Only repainted once in 15 years and still works and looks good. Great for shopping lists, homework, and all sorts of impromptu drawing (DC not me) over mealtimes and while I am cooking etc. Don't think a freestanding board or picture frame arrangement would work so well for this. Wouldn't have chalk in the bedroom - just a recipe for chalk bits and dust everywhere, especially if you have carpet.

Blackboard paint is great for chalking on but I completely agree with PP that the magnetic element is useless. A very large memo board, maybe in an ornate or fancy frame, could work well.

Large sheet of metal and a blackboard screwed on to the wall would be better.
Not magnetic or blackboard but you could use cork tiles stuck to the wall.

I haven't used magnetic but I've got an area in the kitchen done in blackboard paint (its where a pipe was boxed in, so about 12" wide)

IIRC from the tin its really toxic so I wouldn't want this particular one in a childs room.
I have no idea how I'd paint over it (I probably wouldn't TBH , it would be easier just to remove and replace the boxed in bit)

Though I have to say, I use the blackboard every day ,so Smile

Magnetic needs a lot of coats and still only sticks to larger lighter magnets
