Bathroom at front of house

Would this put you off buying a house? We did some internal renovation when we moved in, and placed the small bathroom at the front of the house (before it was in the middle of two rooms without a window). I have a thing about all rooms having windows (especially bathrooms!), and it couldn't be moved to the back as the plumbing is all at the front/side. We also moved things around to make more space in the bedrooms and took out a water tank etc, so it wasn't just to move the bathroom that we did a lot of work.

We're thinking of moving in the next couple of years, and I'm starting to worry about if this will put people off the house? It's already a small house with 2 double beds and a tiny box room (would only fit a toddler bed, currently used as a study). We're not on a main road (no through-way, and it's a quiet road) and the glass is frosted with curtain-type things, but you can see the bathroom window from the street.

I don't think we can do anything about it, and the market is already slow here in SE - but if it's something that really bothers people we might need to price really low to sell. And then we might not be able to upsize if we can't afford it :(

We have a bathroom at the front. Never even considered it to be an issue. Most houses round here have the bathroom at the front

EmmaGrundyForPM · 03/06/2018 14:06

Our last house had the bathroom at the front and it didn't even cross my mind when purchasing it. We put a waterproof rollerblind in.

Our next door neighbours had the same layout but didn't realise that frosted glass just isn't enough. I often walked up the street to see the outline of Mr NDN peeing.

Go ahead but buy a blind

We have a bathroom at the front. It didn't even occur to me that this was an issue when we bought it and it hasn't been a problem at all.

BerryBad · 03/06/2018 18:47

Thanks all, that's really reassuring. I think perhaps I'm overthinking it, I just didn't know anyone else who had a similar layout (everyone I know has the bathroom at the back of the house) and ours is the only 'different' layout on our street.

Thanks again, I feel better now :)

I have that and it’s not a problem.
I’m not keen on a toilet by the front door though.

I know a few people who have bathrooms in the front. I never thought of it as a problem. I do however struggle with one family's downstairs loo with a window opening on to the walk up to the front door. Neighbours of mine remodelled recently such that their kitchen now sits in the front of the house. I can't work out if I like this or not.

Our bathroom is at the front of the house, same as everyone on our street... It never in a million years crossed my mind that it was in any way unusual! Is it not the done thing?! My plasterer did comment on it once but i didn't think much of it. We have frosted glass and no blind too! Blush

ziggiestardust · 03/06/2018 18:59

I’ve visited a friend with a bathroom in the front.... it had a frosted window so why would there be a problem?

MissCherryCakeyBun · 03/06/2018 19:01

As long as it's upstairs I don't mind where the bathroom is, I refused to view houses that had the full bathroom downstairs as I lived in a Council house like that for 18 years as my daughter grew up and it was an utter nightmare at night.
Upstairs and at the front is perfectly okay

BrazzleDazzleDay · 03/06/2018 19:08

I've never thought of this before, I don't think I have ever been in a house with a bathroom at the front. Don't see why it would be a problem though

happymummy12345 · 03/06/2018 19:12

In my mums old house the bathroom was at the front. Was never a problem. My dads toilet and bathroom are at the front and that's not a problem either.
Not sure why it matters.

reallyanotherone · 03/06/2018 19:15

I don’t get why anyone would be bothered?

Unless it has clear windows and a direct view into the shower from the top floor of passing buses?

I’ve just had to think and our bathroom is at the front. It’s never even occurrd to me before.

SubtitlesOn · 03/06/2018 19:20

I think it depends whether you mean....

At the front upstairs - yes no problem

Or

By the front door downstairs - I wouldn't like personally (weird I know, but wouldn't like someone to have rung the doorbell and be standing there waiting for the door to be answered hearing me flush toilet etc)

SubtitlesOn · 03/06/2018 19:21

*if you had window open next to front door

SporkInTheToaster · 03/06/2018 19:34

No, it wouldn’t bother me. I’d rather the bedrooms were on the back for a quiet night’s sleep, so the bathroom on the front frees up space for that.

Yes it's upstairs, although the downstairs WC is also at the front - but that's the case for all the houses on the street. I guess I was worried because I suddenly realised I didn't know other houses with a similar layout existed! Sounds silly now, but glad it shouldn't be an issue.

Now just need the market to pick up a bit Grin

My parents old house, their new house and my own house (rented) all have their bathrooms at the front of the house. Never even occurred to me that this is something people might actively look to avoid!!!

I would avoid buying my house though purely for the location of the window - bathroom looks out onto busy main road and the window is over the bath! Whoever designed that should be shot.......

Mosaic123 · 04/06/2018 08:30

No problem at all.

I agree with you about the windows. I prefer a bathroom with a window, however small. It's better to open a window than tolerate a noisy fan.

missperegrinespeculiar · 04/06/2018 15:05

Upstairs, no problem at all, downstairs by front door, wouldn't like it!
